Alaska Airlines Flight Cancelled: Compensation Guide

Alaska Airlines consistently ranks among the top US carriers for customer satisfaction, but cancellations still happen. When they do, federal DOT rules and Alaska's own Guest Commitment give you strong protections. Here is how to claim everything you are owed.

Alaska's Guest Commitment

Alaska Airlines has one of the more passenger-friendly customer commitments among US carriers. For controllable cancellations and delays, Alaska provides meal vouchers (delays of 3+ hours), hotel accommodation (controllable overnight delays), and rebooking on the next available Alaska flight or partner airline.

Alaska is also a member of the oneworld alliance, which means rebooking options may include American Airlines, British Airways, and other oneworld partners. This significantly improves your rebooking options compared to carriers with fewer partnerships.

Alaska's oneworld membership is an advantage. If Alaska cancels your flight, ask about rebooking on American Airlines or other oneworld partners. Alaska agents can often book you on partner flights the same day.

Your DOT Refund Rights

Under DOT rules, you are entitled to a full cash refund when Alaska cancels your flight or significantly delays it. The same rules apply regardless of fare class or reason for the cancellation. Alaska must refund the full amount to your original payment method within 7 business days for credit cards.

If you paid with Alaska Mileage Plan miles, Alaska must restore the miles to your account and refund any taxes or fees paid in cash. Both components are required. For details on the refund process, see our complete refund guide.

How to Request Your Refund

  1. 1

Log in at alaskaair.com and navigate to "My Trips" to check for a refund option.

  2. 2

Call Alaska at 1-800-252-7522 if no online option is available.

  3. 3

State clearly that you want a "full cash refund to original payment method under the DOT final rule."

  4. 4

If you paid with miles, confirm that both miles and cash fees will be restored.

  5. 5

Keep your confirmation number and any written correspondence.

Missed Connections on Alaska

Alaska operates hub-and-spoke networks through Seattle (SEA), Portland (PDX), and other West Coast cities. If a delay on your first Alaska flight caused you to miss a connection on the same booking, Alaska is responsible for rebooking you and providing assistance during the wait.

Single booking vs. separate tickets matters. If your entire itinerary is on one Alaska booking, Alaska is responsible for the missed connection. If you booked separate tickets, the second airline has no obligation to help. See our missed connection guide for more details.

Escalation and Claims

Alaska generally handles refund requests better than most US carriers, but denials still happen. If Alaska refuses your refund, file a complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer. You can also check your flight with TravelStacks for a free eligibility assessment.
