Alaska Airlines Cancelled Your Flight: Refund and Compensation Rights

Alaska Airlines has one of the strongest customer-service reputations among US carriers, but cancellation refunds still require a specific process. Here is exactly what Alaska owes you, how to demand cash instead of travel credit, and what to do if Alaska says no.

Your Rights When Alaska Cancels Your Flight

When Alaska Airlines cancels a flight, federal DOT rules entitle you to a full cash refund to your original payment method. The reason does not matter. Weather, mechanical, crew, scheduling: the refund right applies in all cases.

If Alaska's cancellation causes a significant delay to your arrival rather than a full cancellation (3+ hours domestic or 6+ hours international), the same refund right is triggered. You can choose a refund OR rebooking on the next available Alaska flight at no additional cost.

Alaska must refund to the original payment method within 7 business days for credit cards and 20 calendar days for other payment methods under the DOT final rule effective October 2024.

Cash vs. Travel Credit: You Choose

Alaska's first cancellation response often offers a travel credit ("Credit Card" or "Wallet" in the Alaska app). The credit is tempting because it's faster than a cash refund, but under DOT rules, you have the right to cash back to your original payment method.

If you accept the travel credit and later change your mind, you can often convert it to cash by contacting Alaska customer service and citing the DOT final rule. This is not guaranteed (Alaska has latitude once you accept), but conversion requests succeed in most cases.

If you paid with Mileage Plan miles: Alaska must restore the miles to your account AND refund any taxes or fees paid in cash. Both must be returned. For Alaska's DOT track record on refunds, see the Alaska DOT refund record.

How to Request Your Alaska Refund

  1. 1

Log in to alaskaair.com and go to "Manage Trips." If Alaska cancelled, a refund option should appear.

  2. 2

If only travel credit is offered, call Alaska at 1-800-252-7522 and say: "I would like a full cash refund to my original payment method under the DOT final rule."

  3. 3

Record the confirmation number and the agent's name.

  4. 4

Alaska must process the refund within 7 business days for credit card and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.

  5. 5

If the refund doesn't arrive on time, file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

What Alaska Owes During a Controllable Cancellation

Alaska signed the DOT airline customer service dashboard pledge, which means Alaska commits to specific obligations during "controllable" cancellations (within Alaska's control: crew, maintenance, scheduling).

  • Meal vouchers for controllable delays 3+ hours.

  • Hotel accommodation and ground transport for controllable overnight cancellations.

  • Rebooking on the next available Alaska flight at no additional cost.

  • Partner rebooking on Horizon Air and codeshare partners (American, Hawaiian, Oneworld partners) when no Alaska flight is available.

Weather cancellations do not trigger the hotel obligation, but the refund right is not affected by the cancellation reason. For how other airlines handle cancellations, see the Spirit cancelled your flight guide and the Hawaiian Airlines cancelled your flight guide.

What to Do If Alaska Says No

  1. 1

Resubmit in writing through Customer Care at alaskaair.com. Written claims are tracked separately from phone calls.

  2. 2

File a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Airlines must respond to DOT complaints, and refund denials are frequently reversed after DOT intervention.

  3. 3

Credit card chargeback is available if you paid by card and Alaska refused a valid refund. Contact your card issuer with documentation.

  4. 4

Small claims court is an option for larger amounts (Alaska typically settles before a court appearance).

Alaska's Rebooking Network

Alaska has rebooking agreements with American Airlines and its Oneworld partners (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, S7). If Alaska's next flight is more than a few hours away, request rebooking on a partner.

Partner rebooking is at no additional cost if Alaska cancelled the original flight. Say at the counter: "Please rebook me on the next available American Airlines flight to [destination]." For more on airline rebooking options, see the United Airlines cancelled your flight guide.

Alaska's Cancellation Rate and Track Record

Alaska Airlines has one of the lowest cancellation rates in the US (typically under 2%), based on Bureau of Transportation Statistics data. When Alaska does cancel, the reasons are predominantly weather at Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) hub during winter and mechanical in aging Boeing 737 fleet. Alaska's refund processing has improved significantly since the 2024 DOT final rule.
