Allegiant Air Cancellation Policy: What Passengers Get Back

Allegiant Air cancellation compensation rights are governed by US DOT 14 CFR Part 260. Allegiant's ultra-low-cost model means most fares are marketed as non-refundable, but DOT rules override airline policy: when Allegiant cancels or significantly delays a flight and the passenger declines rebooking, a full cash refund is required regardless of fare type.

Allegiant Air Cancellation Compensation: US DOT Rules Override Fare Policy

Allegiant Air cancellation compensation is governed by US DOT 14 CFR Part 260, not Allegiant's internal fare rules. Allegiant markets most fares as non-refundable and charges fees for changes, but federal law overrides those terms in two situations: when Allegiant cancels the flight, or when Allegiant causes a significant delay (3+ hours domestic) and the passenger chooses not to fly. In either case, a full cash refund to the original payment method is required regardless of fare type.

'Non-refundable' means the passenger cannot voluntarily cancel for cash. It does not mean Allegiant can cancel your flight and keep your money. Federal law requires the cash refund when the airline is at fault.

Allegiant's Route Model and Why Delays Happen

  • Point-to-point leisure routes: Allegiant connects smaller markets (Provo, Bozeman, Belleville, Punta Gorda) to leisure destinations (Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Destin). These routes often have 2 to 4 weekly flights, not daily.

  • Limited spare aircraft: Allegiant operates older MD-80 series and A320-family aircraft with a lean maintenance model. Mechanical delays are a known pattern.

  • Thin schedule buffer: Low frequency means a single aircraft issue can cascade into a 24-hour delay or outright cancellation on that route.

  • No hub-and-spoke recovery: Unlike major carriers, Allegiant cannot easily rebook passengers on partner airlines or alternate routing.

  • Weather at leisure destinations: Florida thunderstorm season (June-September) and Phoenix summer heat produce regular weather-adjacent delays.

When Allegiant Must Give You a Cash Refund

  • Flight cancellation: Any cause. Allegiant must offer cash refund to original payment if you decline rebooking.

  • 3+ hour domestic delay: When Allegiant delays a domestic flight 3 or more hours and you choose not to fly.

  • Significant schedule change: If Allegiant changes your departure time significantly before travel and you do not accept.

  • Class downgrade: Refund of the fare difference.

  • Significant airport change: If routing changes to a different airport without acceptance.

  • Baggage fee refund: If your bag arrives 12+ hours late on a domestic flight.

Allegiant's Voluntary Change and Cancellation Policy

When you want to cancel voluntarily (not because Allegiant cancelled), the rules are different:

  • Trip Flex (purchased add-on): Allows one-time change to travel date, time, or destination with no change fee. Not a cash refund; creates a travel credit.

  • Standard non-refundable fares: Voluntary cancellation before departure yields a credit valid for 24 months. No cash refund.

  • 24-hour rule: DOT requires all airlines to offer a 24-hour grace period for cancellation on tickets purchased 7+ days before departure. Within this window, Allegiant must refund cash regardless of fare type.

  • Credit card dispute: Voluntary cancellation does not trigger chargeback rights. Chargeback rights apply when Allegiant fails to deliver the service (cancellation by Allegiant, significant delay).

How to File an Allegiant Cancellation Refund Claim

  1. 1

At the airport or during disruption: tell the gate agent or call Allegiant customer service. Explicitly state: 'I am declining this rebooking under 14 CFR Part 260 and requesting a cash refund to my original payment method.'

  2. 2

Online: allegiantair.com (customer service or manage my trip section). Look for refund request or flight disruption form.

  3. 3

    Phone: Allegiant customer service 702-505-8888.

  4. 4

Document the disruption: boarding pass or booking confirmation, Allegiant notification (email or text), FIDS screenshot.

  5. 5

Credit card refund: must post within 7 business days.

  6. 6

If not resolved: open a TravelStacks claim. We submit and escalate to the DOT on your behalf.

Allegiant's customer service wait times are notoriously long. Filing online is often faster. TravelStacks submits directly to Allegiant's refund processing system and tracks the deadline.

Common Allegiant Cancellation Mistakes

  • Accepting a travel credit thinking it equals cash: It does not. Under DOT rules, cash to original payment is your right when Allegiant cancels.

  • Not declining rebooking explicitly: If you do not explicitly decline, Allegiant may treat the rebooking as accepted and deny the refund.

  • Missing the 24-hour voluntary window: The 24-hour free cancellation period is separate from your DOT rights. Know which applies.

  • Waiting too long to file: DOT complaint windows are strongest when filed within 60 days of the disruption.

  • Confusing Trip Flex with a refund: Trip Flex creates a travel credit, not cash. It is useful for voluntary changes but does not apply to airline-caused cancellations.

EU261 and International Allegiant Routes

Allegiant Air is a US-licensed carrier with no international routes departing from EU airports as of April 2026. EU261 does not apply on any Allegiant itinerary. All Allegiant routes are domestic US or US to Mexico/Caribbean, covered by US DOT 14 CFR Part 260 exclusively.

Get Your Allegiant Refund Started

Allegiant's non-refundable fare marketing does not override federal law. When Allegiant cancels or significantly delays your flight, cash refund to original payment is your right.
