American Airlines Refund Policy 2026: What Actually Applies

American Airlines operates under four rule layers: federal DOT rules (always apply), American's fare class terms, 24-hour cancellation, and AAdvantage award rules. The DOT rule overrides American's internal restrictions when American causes the disruption.

Basic Economy is non-refundable only for voluntary passenger actions. If American cancels a Basic Economy flight, you still receive a full cash refund under the DOT final rule.

Under the DOT final rule, American must refund to original payment method when:

   American significantly changes: arrival time by 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international).

   American changes the departure or arrival airport.

Under the DOT 24-Hour Reservation Requirement, American must allow either free cancellation within 24 hours OR a 24-hour hold. American offers free cancellation. This applies to:

  Tickets booked 7+ days before departure.

  Full refund to original payment method, no fees.

OTA bookings (Expedia, Priceline, etc.) are subject to the OTA's 24-hour rules, which typically mirror the DOT rule but may have different procedures.

American's fare class rules for voluntary changes and cancellations:

  Basic Economy: no changes, no cancellations (except 24-hour rule). Forfeits full fare if not used.

• ›

  Main Cabin: no change fees, cancellations receive travel credit (not refund). Within 24 hours of booking: full refund.

  Main Cabin Refundable: fully refundable to original payment method, higher fare cost.

• ›

  First/Business: typically refundable, varies by fare sub-class.

• ›

  AAnytime: fully refundable.

All of the above is for voluntary cancellations. American-initiated cancellations ALWAYS trigger the DOT refund right regardless of fare class.

Award ticket refunds:

  Cancelled by American: miles restored + taxes/fees refunded in cash. No fee, within 7 business days.

  Voluntarily cancelled by passenger: fee may apply based on AAdvantage status. Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum typically waive fees.

  Partner award tickets: American handles the refund even when operated by Oneworld partner.

• ›

  Cancellation within 24 hours of booking: no fee regardless of status.

If American issued Trip Credit when a cash refund was actually owed, convert to cash:
