American Airlines Refund Policy: Cash, Credit, or Nothing?
American Airlines is the world's largest airline by fleet size. Understanding AA's refund policy means separating what they voluntarily offer from what federal law requires. Here is the reality.
When American Must Refund
Under DOT rules, American Airlines must provide a full cash refund when your flight is cancelled, significantly delayed (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international), when you are downgraded, or when the departure/arrival airport is changed. This applies to all fare classes.
American's "non-refundable" label is misleading for cancellations. Non-refundable restrictions apply to voluntary changes. For airline-initiated cancellations and significant delays, all AA tickets are refundable under DOT rules.

AA and EU261
American Airlines operates transatlantic service from multiple US hubs. AA flights departing from EU or UK airports are covered by EU261 or UK261, entitling passengers to up to €600/£520. US departures are not covered. Check your flight for eligibility.
