Austrian Airlines is a Lufthansa Group EU carrier operating from Vienna. EU261 applies in full. This guide covers claim eligibility, amounts, filing, and escalation for Austrian flight delays.

Does EU261 Apply to Austrian Airlines?

Yes. Austrian Airlines AG is an Austrian carrier headquartered in Vienna and a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Group. Austria is an EU member state, making Austrian an EU carrier fully subject to EU261/2004.

Coverage: EU261 applies to all Austrian flights departing from Vienna International (VIE) and any other EU airport. Austrian also operates transatlantic routes to North America, covered in full for the Vienna-departure leg and for return journeys as an EU carrier.

For the full EU261 eligibility framework, see the EU261 rights guide.

Compensation Amounts for Austrian Delays

EU261 compensation for delays of 3+ hours at the final destination:

  • 250 euros: flights under 1,500 km (e.g., Vienna to Prague, Budapest, Zurich)

  • 400 euros: flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km (e.g., Vienna to London, Paris, Athens)

  • 600 euros: flights over 3,500 km (e.g., Vienna to New York, Chicago, Tokyo)

Austrian's Vienna hub offers connections to North America and Asia, with qualifying delays on these longer routes triggering the 600 euro tier.

How to File an Austrian EU261 Claim

File through Austrian's customer service portal at austrian.com. Include your booking confirmation, flight number, and actual versus scheduled arrival time at the final destination.

If Austrian refuses or does not respond within 8 weeks, escalate to the Austrian Civil Aviation Authority (ACG/Austro Control), Austria's national enforcement body for EU261. The ACG handles EU261 complaints for flights departing Austrian airports.

Lufthansa Group note: Austrian is part of Lufthansa Group, along with Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. Being booked on a Star Alliance or Lufthansa Group itinerary does not change the fact that your EU261 claim is against Austrian as the operating carrier.

Austrian and Extraordinary Circumstances

Austrian may deny compensation citing extraordinary circumstances. Technical issues on the aircraft are generally not extraordinary under EU case law. Genuine ATC strikes, severe weather affecting flight safety, and security threats do qualify.

If Austrian denies your claim, request the specific reason in writing. Contest any denial based on operational or technical reasons that fall within normal airline operations.
