Avelo Airlines Refund Policy: Ultra-Low-Cost Rights Explained
Founder, TravelStacks
Avelo Airlines operates ultra-low fares with a strict no-refund policy on most tickets. Federal DOT rules override that policy for cancellations and significant delays. Here is what Avelo passengers can actually claim.
Avelo Airlines Is Ultra-Low-Cost: Why That Changes Your Refund Strategy
Avelo Airlines launched in 2021 as a point-to-point ultra-low-cost carrier focused on secondary airports and underserved routes. Like other ULCCs, Avelo's business model depends on low base fares and ancillary fees for bags, seats, and priority boarding. Refunds are not part of that model.
Most Avelo tickets are non-refundable by design. Voluntary cancellations produce a travel credit, not a cash refund. This is legal under US rules when the cancellation is your choice. It is not legal when Avelo cancels the flight.
The key distinction: When Avelo cancels your flight or significantly delays it, federal law steps in. The airline's own refund policy becomes irrelevant. US DOT rules require a full cash refund to your original payment method, regardless of what Avelo's terms and conditions say.
Avelo's Official Refund Policy: What the Airline Allows
Avelo sells tickets in standard and occasional promotional tiers. Unless otherwise stated at booking, standard fares are non-refundable and non-transferable. Voluntary cancellations produce a travel credit minus any applicable fee.
- ›
Standard (non-refundable) tickets: Voluntary cancellations result in a travel credit, typically valid for 12 months from the original booking date. No cash refund.
- ›
24-hour free cancellation: Federal law requires free cancellation within 24 hours of booking, provided the flight is at least 7 days away. This applies to all Avelo tickets, including non-refundable fares.
- ›
Avelo-initiated cancellations: If Avelo cancels your flight, you are entitled to a full cash refund regardless of ticket type.
- ›
Significant schedule changes: If Avelo changes your departure or arrival time by 3 or more hours, you may reject the change and request a full cash refund.
Avelo does not publish a formal change fee schedule comparable to legacy carriers. The credit amount for voluntary cancellations depends on fare rules at the time of booking. Always check fare conditions before purchasing.
DOT Rules Override Avelo for Cancellations and Significant Delays
The DOT's 2024 final refund rule applies to all US airlines, including Avelo. The airline cannot opt out of these requirements regardless of its own terms and conditions.
- ›
Flight cancellation (any reason): Full cash refund to your original payment method. This includes weather, mechanical, or operational cancellations.
- ›
Significant domestic departure delay (3 or more hours): If you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a full cash refund.
- ›
Significant domestic arrival delay (3 or more hours): Same refund right if you cancel rather than accept the delayed flight.
- ›
Significant airport change: If Avelo moves your departure or arrival airport without your consent, a full refund is owed.
- ›
Seat downgrade: If you paid for a specific seat category and Avelo moves you to a lower one, a partial refund of the difference is owed.
DOT's definition of significant change: A 3-hour departure or arrival delay (domestic), an airport change, a new connection that significantly extends travel time, or a move to a lower class of service. Any of these triggers your right to a full refund if you choose not to fly. See the full US DOT passenger rights guide for details.
What Avelo Owes You During a Delay: Care Rights
Unlike EU261, US DOT rules do not mandate meals, vouchers, or hotel accommodation during delays. Avelo is a budget carrier with minimal voluntary amenities during disruptions. What the airline is legally required to do during a delay is limited but important.
- ›
Tarmac delay rule: Avelo must offer passengers the chance to deplane if a domestic flight sits on the tarmac for more than 3 hours. Violating this rule triggers significant DOT fines.
- ›
Rebooking: Avelo must rebook you on the next available Avelo flight at no charge if your flight is cancelled. If no Avelo flight works for you, request a full refund instead.
- ›
Hotel and meals: Not legally required under US law. Avelo may offer vouchers at its discretion during extended delays, but this is not a right.
EU261's care rights (meals, hotel, communication allowance during delays) do not apply to Avelo flights. EU261 governs flights departing from EU airports. Avelo operates exclusively within the US. For a comparison of what US and EU law provide, see which compensation law covers your flight.
Denied Boarding on Avelo Flights
If Avelo overbooks a flight and cannot accommodate all confirmed passengers, federal law requires the airline to seek volunteers first. If insufficient volunteers come forward, Avelo must involuntarily deny boarding and pay DOT-mandated compensation.
- ›
Involuntary bump, rebooked within 1 to 4 hours: 200% of the one-way fare, up to $775, paid in cash at the airport.
- ›
Involuntary bump, rebooked more than 4 hours late: 400% of the one-way fare, up to $1,550, paid in cash at the airport.
- ›
Voluntary bumping: If you agree to give up your seat, you negotiate the compensation directly. There is no legal maximum for voluntary agreements, and you can often secure more than the involuntary rate.
- ›
Exceptions: Passengers on small aircraft (under 30 seats), passengers who miss check-in deadlines, or passengers removed for safety or security reasons are not protected by bumping rules.
How to File a Refund Claim with Avelo
For a DOT-mandated refund (cancelled or significantly delayed flight), follow this process:
- 1
Document the disruption. Note scheduled and actual times, the reason stated by Avelo, and any written communications. Screenshot the flight status page.
- 2
Request cash, not a credit. When Avelo contacts you about rebooking or compensation, explicitly state you are requesting a full cash refund to your original payment method. Do not accept a travel credit if you want cash.
- 3
Submit via Avelo's website or customer service. Avelo's refund request process is handled online or by phone. Include your booking reference and flight details.
- 4
Follow up in writing. If you receive no response within 7 business days, email Avelo customer relations with your refund request and documentation.
- 5
File a DOT complaint if needed. If Avelo refuses a refund you are legally entitled to, file at transportation.gov/airconsumer. DOT tracks these complaints and pursues patterns of non-compliance.
DOT processing deadlines: Avelo must issue refunds within 7 business days for credit card payments and 20 calendar days for cash or check payments. If your refund is not processed within these windows, the airline is in violation and a complaint is appropriate.
TravelStacks and Avelo Refund Claims
Avelo passengers who are owed a refund and are getting resistance from the airline can use TravelStacks to handle the process. For US DOT claims, the flat fee is $19 regardless of refund amount. TravelStacks handles the documentation, follow-up, and DOT complaint filing on your behalf.
If you are unsure whether your Avelo disruption qualifies for a cash refund, the US DOT rights page explains the triggers in detail. The general rule: if Avelo made the change, you likely have the right to refuse it and get your money back.
