Chase Travel Insurance Phone Number: Filing a Trip Delay Claim

Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred cardholders have trip delay insurance that covers meals, hotels, and essential items when flights are delayed. This guide covers the Chase benefits phone number, what to say, what documents to prepare, and how to maximize your claim.

Chase Trip Delay Insurance: The Right Phone Number to Call

Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders have trip delay reimbursement as a built-in benefit. Claims are administered by Echelon Insurance (a subsidiary of Zurich Insurance) on behalf of Chase. The benefits number to call is on the back of your Chase card and in the benefits guide: 1-888-675-1461 (US). For international calls, use the number on the back of your card for collect calls.

Reserve vs. Preferred thresholds: Chase Sapphire Reserve triggers trip delay at 6 hours (up to $500 per person per trip). Chase Sapphire Preferred triggers at 12 hours (up to $500 per person per trip, but lower annual fee).

Add the Chase benefits number to your phone contacts before every trip. When a delay is announced, you want to be able to call immediately. For airline refund rights alongside card coverage, see how to get a refund from your airline. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau provides resources on credit card benefit disputes.

What to Say When You Call Chase Benefits

When calling Chase's benefits administrator during or after a delay:

  1. 1

Provide your Chase card number and the primary cardholder's name.

  2. 2

State that you are experiencing (or have experienced) a trip delay and want to start a trip delay reimbursement claim.

  3. 3

Provide: airline name, flight number, travel date, original and revised departure times, departure airport, final destination.

  4. 4

Ask for a claim reference number and whether documentation should be submitted online or by mail.

  5. 5

Ask about the deadline for submitting documentation (typically 60 days from the incident).

Chase also has an online claim portal accessible through the card's benefit guide link. Many cardholders find the online portal easier for document submission than mailing paper forms.

Covered Expenses Under Chase Trip Delay Insurance

Chase Sapphire Reserve and Preferred trip delay coverage reimburses:

  • Meals and non-alcoholic beverages: Reasonable restaurant meals during the delay. Alcohol is excluded.

  • Hotel accommodation: For delays requiring an overnight stay.

  • Ground transportation: Reasonable transport between the airport and hotel.

  • Essential personal items: Toiletries and basic clothing if checked bags are inaccessible during the delay.

  • Communication: Reasonable phone charges to rebook or contact family.

Coverage is per person (not per ticket), which makes the Chase Sapphire Reserve particularly strong for families and groups. A family of four with a 6-hour delay could potentially recover up to $2,000 in covered expenses. Coverage is secondary to what the airline provides.

Documentation Required for a Chase Delay Claim

Successful Chase delay claims require specific documentation:

  • Airline itinerary: Original booking confirmation showing scheduled departure and arrival times.

  • Card statement: Statement showing the airfare charged to the Chase card.

  • Delay documentation: Written or electronic confirmation from the airline of the delay (email notification, app notification, or airline statement). A screenshot with timestamp is acceptable.

  • Itemized receipts: For all covered expenses. Credit card statements alone are not sufficient; receipts must show what was purchased.

  • Completed claim form: From Chase's benefits portal or provided by the benefits administrator.

Photograph the departure board: A time-stamped photo of the gate departure board showing the delay is useful supplementary evidence when the airline's digital notification is insufficient.

Covered Delay Causes

Chase trip delay insurance covers a broad range of delay causes:

  • Weather: Storms, fog, ice, and other meteorological conditions.

  • Equipment failure: Aircraft mechanical issues.

  • Carrier-caused delays: Crew issues, late inbound aircraft, operational decisions.

  • Labor strikes: Strikes that begin after you purchased your ticket.

  • Hijacking or security incidents: Covered in most cases.

Delays caused by pre-existing conditions, known events before ticket purchase, or financial insolvency of the carrier may be excluded. The Chase Sapphire Reserve benefit guide specifies the full list. For EU261 rights on qualifying EU departures alongside card coverage, see EU261 rights. For UK261, see UK261 rights.

Chase Delay Coverage and DOT Refund Rights Together

Chase card coverage and DOT refund rights are independent and can both apply:

  • DOT refund: A domestic delay of 3 or more hours entitles you to a cash refund of the ticket under DOT rules if you choose not to travel.

  • Chase trip delay: Reimburses out-of-pocket expenses during the delay, regardless of DOT status.

  • Both apply: Receive the DOT refund for the ticket AND Chase reimbursement for delay expenses.

  • EU261/UK261 separately: For qualifying EU or UK departures, statutory compensation applies independently.

Use TravelStacks to check what statutory compensation your disruption may qualify for, then use the card claim for out-of-pocket expenses. See how to get a refund from your airline for the complete recovery framework. For DOT air consumer resources, see transportation.gov.

Tips for Maximizing Your Chase Delay Claim

Frequent travelers on Chase Sapphire Reserve can maximize the benefit with these practices:

  • Always charge the full airfare to the Chase Sapphire Reserve to ensure coverage is active.

  • The per-person limit (not per-ticket) is a major advantage. For groups, multiply the $500 limit by the number of passengers on the booking whose tickets were also charged to the card.

  • Book the hotel directly and request an itemized receipt at checkout. Many hotels will pre-itemize if you mention you need it for an insurance claim.

  • Keep a running receipt folder (physical or email folder) from the moment the delay is announced. Reconstruct expenses later is harder and often incomplete.

  • If the delay causes you to miss a hotel night at your destination, keep the hotel cancellation receipt. Some claim administrators will reimburse non-refundable hotel fees caused by the delay.
