Chicago to Dublin Flight Delayed: How to Claim EU261

Chicago O'Hare to Dublin is a popular transatlantic route served by Aer Lingus (an EU carrier) and United (a US carrier). Aer Lingus passengers have strong EU261 rights. Here is how to claim up to 600 euros.

Aer Lingus: Full EU261 Coverage

Aer Lingus is an EU carrier (Irish), meaning EU261 covers all Aer Lingus flights, including flights departing from the US. An Aer Lingus flight from Chicago O'Hare to Dublin that is delayed 3 or more hours at arrival entitles you to €600 per person (the route is over 3,500 km).

Ireland has a 6-year limitation period. Dublin departures can be claimed up to 6 years after the disruption. This is one of the longest limitation periods in Europe. Check old flights too.

United: DOT Rules Only (Outbound)

United also operates Chicago to Dublin. Because United is a US carrier departing from a US airport, EU261 does not apply to the outbound flight. Only DOT rules cover United's ORD to DUB service. A cancellation or delay of 6+ hours entitles you to a DOT refund.

The return flight (Dublin to Chicago on United) is covered by EU261 because it departs from an EU airport. For ORD delay patterns, see our airport guide. For the refund process, see our complete guide.

US Customs Preclearance in Dublin

Dublin offers US Customs and Border Protection preclearance, meaning you clear US immigration before boarding in Dublin. This does not affect your EU261 rights. If your Aer Lingus flight from Chicago is delayed, EU261 applies based on the delay at arrival in Dublin.

How to File Your Claim

  1. 1

For Aer Lingus: visit aerlingus.com and navigate to the EU261 claim form under Customer Care.

  2. 2

Cite EU Regulation 261/2004 and state €600 per person.

  3. 3

For United: request a DOT refund through united.com or call 1-800-864-8331.

  4. 4

If rejected, escalate to the Irish Aviation Authority or the DOT.
