Codeshare Upgrade Rights: The Unexpected Rules
Codeshare upgrade rights almost never work the way you expect. Your UA Global Services status does not typically buy an upgrade on an LH-operated codeshare. Your SkyMiles do not necessarily upgrade an AF-operated flight. Here are the actual rules.
Codeshare Upgrade Rights: The Default Rule
Codeshare upgrade rights default to 'you cannot use one carrier's status or miles on another carrier's operated flight.' Your AA Executive Platinum status does not buy an upgrade on a BA-operated codeshare, even though both are oneworld. This surprises frequent flyers every year.
Status rarely transfers across metal. Alliance membership gets you lounge access and baggage fee waivers, not upgrades on partner flights.
Why Cross-Carrier Upgrades Fail
Each airline's upgrade inventory is separately managed. When AA issues a systemwide upgrade, it draws from AA's own premium-cabin inventory. BA has no obligation to honor it, because BA's premium cabin is allocated by BA to paying BA customers and BA elites. Joint ventures can override this, but standard alliance membership does not.
Joint Venture Exceptions
- ›
Delta-KLM-Air France JV: some cross-carrier upgrades possible for elite status holders.
- ›
United-Lufthansa-ANA JV: reciprocal upgrade in select cases (advance upgrades not typical).
- ›
American-BA-Iberia-Finnair JV: some transatlantic upgrade options for elites.
- ›
JAL-American oneworld: trans-Pacific JV allows certain cross-carrier premium bookings.
See Delta-KLM joint venture codeshare rules for the specific JV rules.
How to Get Premium Cabin on a Codeshare
- 1
Buy premium cabin directly from the operating carrier's website (not the marketing carrier's).
- 2
Use the operating carrier's own miles or status.
- 3
Watch for joint venture overlap on specific routes.
- 4
Consider paid upgrades at check-in with the operating carrier.
- 5
For infrequent travelers: just book premium cabin paid.
When Codeshare Pricing Beats Direct
Sometimes codeshare pricing is lower than direct-carrier pricing for the same operating flight. If the codeshare ticket is cheaper, book through the marketing carrier. You lose the ability to use operating carrier status for onboard benefits beyond baggage, but you save money upfront. Upgrade space at check-in is still available for purchase via the operating carrier. See codeshare baggage damage: whose rules apply for the baggage parallel and who pays the hotel on a codeshare delay for care obligations.
Status Benefits That DO Transfer
- ›
Lounge access (via alliance status, with a same-day intl ticket).
- ›
Baggage fee waivers (usually).
- ›
Priority check-in (usually).
- ›
Priority boarding (usually, when operating carrier honors alliance).
- ›
Mile accrual on marketing carrier program.
