Not all premium cards give you the same lounge access during a flight delay. This comparison covers Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Capital One Venture X, and Citi Prestige, comparing lounge networks, delay policies, guest rules, and value.

Quick Comparison

  • Annual Fee: Amex Platinum $695 vs Chase Sapphire Reserve $550 vs Capital One Venture X $395 vs Citi Prestige $495

  • Lounge Network: Amex Platinum: Centurion + Priority Pass + Delta Sky Club (when flying Delta) + others vs Chase Sapphire Reserve: Priority Pass Select (1,300+ lounges) vs Capital One Venture X: Capital One lounges + Priority Pass Select vs Citi Prestige: Priority Pass Select (1,300+ lounges)

  • Delay Trigger for Lounges: All four: access is based on same-day travel, not delay status. You enter the lounge with a boarding pass for that day's flight.

  • Guest Policy: Amex Platinum: 2 free guests at Centurion; Priority Pass guests at $35/each vs Chase Sapphire Reserve: Priority Pass guests included (up to 2 at some properties, varies) vs Capital One Venture X: 2 free guests at Capital One lounges; Priority Pass varies vs Citi Prestige: Priority Pass Select guests at $35/each

  • Best For: Amex Platinum: Frequent travelers who want the widest lounge variety vs Chase Sapphire Reserve: Travelers wanting Priority Pass with included guests vs Capital One Venture X: Best value at lowest annual fee vs Citi Prestige: Frequent international travelers (if benefit still active)

  • Verdict: Amex Platinum wins on lounge variety; Venture X wins on value-to-fee ratio; Sapphire Reserve wins on flexibility; Citi Prestige has significantly reduced benefits since 2019

Amex Platinum: The Widest Lounge Network

The American Express Platinum Card offers access to more lounge brands than any other personal travel credit card. Key lounge networks included:

  • Centurion Lounges: Amex's flagship proprietary lounges in major US airports (JFK, LAX, CLT, DFW, MIA, PHL, SEA, SFO, IAH, LAS) and internationally (London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Sydney, Delhi). Centurion Lounges are widely considered the best US carrier-agnostic airport lounges.

  • Priority Pass Select: Access to 1,300+ lounges worldwide. Note: as of 2023, Amex removed coverage for restaurants that participate in Priority Pass (a significant reduction from prior benefits).

  • Delta Sky Club: When flying Delta on a same-day Delta ticket, Amex Platinum cardholders get Delta Sky Club access (limitation: capped at 10 visits per year as of 2025).

  • Escape Lounges, Lufthansa Business Lounges (when flying Lufthansa), Airspace Lounges: Additional networks with varying access rules.

During a delay, your Amex Platinum lounge access works the same as normal: present your card and same-day boarding pass. The lounge does not care whether your flight is on time. This makes lounge access one of the most reliable delay benefits, because it requires no claim filing. For expense reimbursement during delays (meals not in a lounge, hotel costs), use the trip delay insurance benefit separately.

Chase Sapphire Reserve: Priority Pass Select with Included Guests

The Chase Sapphire Reserve includes Priority Pass Select membership, giving access to 1,300+ lounges worldwide. Key differences from Amex Platinum's Priority Pass offering:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve Priority Pass includes coverage for Priority Pass restaurant partners (where Amex removed this benefit in 2023).

  • Guest policy: Priority Pass Select under Sapphire Reserve includes guests at no additional charge at some properties. Verify the current policy for each lounge, as guest policies vary by Priority Pass property.

  • The Chase Sapphire Reserve does not include Centurion Lounge access, Delta Sky Club access, or other proprietary lounge networks beyond Priority Pass.

  • Chase also added access to select Sapphire lounge locations, though this network is significantly smaller than Centurion.

For travelers who primarily fly through airports with Priority Pass lounges (which is most major international airports), the Sapphire Reserve's lounge benefit covers the most common use cases. The 6-hour trip delay benefit ($500 per ticket) also makes Sapphire Reserve strong for delay protection beyond just lounge access. Capital One Venture X: Best Value Lounge Card

The Capital One Venture X Card at $395 annual fee offers lounge access that rivals cards costing $200 to $300 more per year:

  • Capital One Lounges: Priority access to Capital One's proprietary lounges (currently at Dallas Fort Worth DFW, Dulles IAD, and Denver DEN, with expansion ongoing). These are widely considered among the best US domestic lounges.

  • Priority Pass Select: 1,300+ lounges worldwide included. Guest policy: up to 2 guests free at Capital One lounges; Priority Pass guest policy varies by property.

  • Plaza Premium Lounges: Access to Plaza Premium network in addition to Priority Pass, expanding coverage at Asian and Canadian airports.

The Venture X is particularly strong for travelers who frequently pass through DFW, IAD, or DEN, where Capital One's flagship lounges are located. The $300 annual travel credit and 10,000-mile anniversary bonus effectively reduce the net annual fee to near zero for frequent travelers, making it the highest-value lounge card at its price point.

Using Lounge Access Effectively During a Delay

  • Lounge access is granted based on your same-day boarding pass, regardless of flight status. Enter the lounge as soon as your delay is announced.

  • Most lounges allow you to stay until your flight is ready, regardless of how long the delay extends. However, some budget Priority Pass lounges have maximum visit times (typically 3 hours). Check the lounge's rules.

  • If your flight is cancelled and you are rebooked for the following day, a new same-day boarding pass for the next day allows lounge re-entry. You may need to exit and re-enter.

  • Food and beverages in proprietary lounges (Centurion, Capital One) are typically free. In Priority Pass lounges, many items are free but alcoholic beverages may be charged.

  • Lounge meals during a delay count against your trip delay insurance meal cap only if you are filing for expenses that exceed the free lounge food. If the lounge fed you, you do not need to also claim meals under trip delay insurance.

Lounge access and trip delay insurance work as complementary benefits. Lounge access provides immediate comfort during the delay. Trip delay insurance reimburses additional expenses (hotels, taxis, personal items) that the lounge cannot provide. For EU-departing flight delays with 3+ hour arrivals, EU261 compensation is also available from the airline separately. File at TravelStacks.

Priority Pass: The Universal Lounge Currency

Priority Pass is the world's largest independent airport lounge network, with over 1,300 lounges in 148 countries. Key facts for delay situations:

  • Priority Pass membership through a credit card grants the same access as a paid Priority Pass Select membership (the highest tier).

  • Not all Priority Pass lounges are equal. Some are small and crowded; others are flagship facilities. Use the Priority Pass app or prioritypass.com to preview lounge quality and amenities before committing.

  • During major disruptions, Priority Pass lounges fill quickly. Some lounges temporarily close their doors to new arrivals when at capacity.

  • Priority Pass also includes access to sleep pods, spa facilities, and airport hotel day rooms at some locations, which can be valuable for long overnight delays.

The Priority Pass website has a lounge finder tool that shows amenities, operating hours, and current guest policies for each location. Verify your specific card's guest inclusion policy before bringing guests, as this varies by issuer even for the same Priority Pass Select tier.
