Delta's 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation
Delta 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation: Cancel any Delta ticket within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund to your original payment method, as long as the ticket was purchased at least 7 days before the departure date. No cancellation fee. No questions asked.
Delta calls this its '24-hour risk-free cancellation' policy, which is both a federal DOT requirement and part of Delta's own customer commitments. The rule applies to tickets purchased at delta.com, the Fly Delta app, by phone, or through travel agencies for Delta-operated flights. Both refundable and non-refundable tickets qualify for the full 24-hour refund; the fare type only matters after the window closes.
How Delta's Policy Works
The 24-hour window runs from the exact timestamp of your purchase confirmation. Delta measures this precisely. To be safe, cancel with at least 30 minutes to spare before the 24-hour mark. Delta's system processes cancellations in real time, and confirmation emails typically arrive within minutes.
- ›
Starts: At the exact time your booking was confirmed.
- ›
Ends: 24 hours later to the minute.
- ›
Trigger: You initiate the cancellation before the window closes.
- ›
7-day purchase requirement: The departure date must be at least 7 days from the purchase date.
- ›
Refund destination: Full purchase price (including taxes and fees) returned to the original payment method.
Tickets That Qualify and Exceptions
- ›
Main Cabin (non-refundable): Qualifies for 24-hour refund. After window: travel credit (eCredit) minus applicable fees.
- ›
Main Cabin (refundable): Qualifies. Cancellations after 24 hours are also refundable under standard fare rules.
- ›
Delta Comfort+: Qualifies.
- ›
First Class: Qualifies.
- ›
Delta One (Business): Qualifies.
- ›
Basic Economy: Qualifies within 24 hours under DOT law. After 24 hours: no changes, no credits, no refund. Ticket is completely forfeit.
- ›
SkyMiles award tickets: Cancel within 24 hours to redeposit miles and refund taxes. After 24 hours, standard award redeposit policies apply.
Note: Delta has eliminated most domestic change fees (for Main Cabin, Comfort+, and higher classes). After the 24-hour window, non-refundable tickets can typically be exchanged for an eCredit, even if the original departure date has passed, subject to Delta's specific fare rules.

What Happens After You Request a Refund
Delta processes 24-hour cancellation refunds to the original payment method. Under DOT rules, Delta must complete this within 7 business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for cash or check. In practice, most refunds appear on credit card statements within 5 to 10 business days including bank processing time.
- ›
Credit card: 7 business day processing timeline. Appearance on statement depends on issuing bank.
- ›
Delta SkyMiles (award ticket): Miles returned to your account. Taxes/fees refunded to the original payment method.
- ›
If the refund is late: Contact Delta customer service with your cancellation confirmation. Escalate to the DOT at transportation.gov/airconsumer if the timeline is exceeded.
When Delta Cancels Your Flight
When Delta cancels your flight or makes a significant change to your itinerary, you are entitled to a full cash refund regardless of fare type and regardless of whether the 24-hour window has passed. The DOT's 2024 rules require Delta to proactively offer a cash refund in these situations, not just a credit or voucher.
For more on what qualifies as a significant schedule change and your rights, see the new DOT rules 2024 guide. For general airline refund guidance, see how to get a refund from an airline and US DOT passenger rights.
