Denied Boarding in 2026: Updated Compensation Amounts
If you are involuntarily bumped from a flight in 2026, US DOT rules entitle you to up to $1,550 in cash, paid at the airport immediately. EU261 provides up to 600 euros. Airlines rely on passengers not knowing these amounts. Here is the current breakdown.
2026 DOT Denied Boarding Compensation
When you are involuntarily denied boarding on a US flight, DOT regulations require the airline to pay you cash compensation calculated as a percentage of your one-way fare, subject to caps that are adjusted periodically for inflation.
- ›
Short delay (arrive within 2 hours domestic / 4 hours international): 200% of one-way fare, up to $775.
- ›
Long delay (arrive more than 2 hours domestic / 4 hours international later): 400% of one-way fare, up to $1,550.
- ›
No alternative offered: Full 400% compensation applies.
This compensation must be paid at the airport, in cash or check. The airline cannot mail it to you later or issue it as a voucher unless you explicitly agree. If the gate agent offers less than the formula requires, ask to see the calculation.
Voluntary vs. Involuntary: Know the Difference
Only involuntary denied boarding triggers mandatory compensation. Voluntary bumping (when you agree to give up your seat in exchange for whatever the airline offers) is a negotiation, and you are bound by what you accept.
Airlines blur this line. They may ask for "volunteers" in a way that pressures passengers into thinking they have no choice. If the airline tells you that you cannot board, ask directly: "Is this voluntary or involuntary?" Do not sign anything that characterizes you as a volunteer. See our overbooking guide for gate-level tactics.
EU261 Denied Boarding Amounts
For flights covered by EU261, denied boarding compensation is fixed by distance, not by fare price.
- ›
Up to 1,500 km: €250 per person.
- ›
1,500 to 3,500 km: €400 per person.
- ›
Over 3,500 km: €600 per person.
EU261 is not capped by your fare price. A €50 ticket still earns the full €250 to €600 compensation. This often means EU261 compensation far exceeds the original ticket price for budget flights.
What to Do at the Gate
- 1
Ask: "Is this voluntary or involuntary?" Do not sign volunteer forms under pressure.
- 2
Request the written statement of your rights that DOT requires airlines to provide.
- 3
Verify the compensation calculation based on your one-way fare and expected delay.
- 4
Note the gate agent's name and exact time you were denied boarding.
- 5
Keep your original boarding pass as evidence.

Exceptions to Denied Boarding Compensation
DOT denied boarding compensation does not apply in these specific situations: charter flights, aircraft with fewer than 30 seats, denied boarding caused by government or security requirements, or when the passenger failed to arrive at the gate on time with required documentation.
