Eurowings is Lufthansa's low-cost arm and a German EU carrier. EU261 applies in full. Here is how to claim for delayed or canceled Eurowings flights and where to escalate if refused.

Does EU261 Apply to Eurowings?

Yes. Eurowings GmbH is a German low-cost carrier headquartered in Düsseldorf, wholly owned by Lufthansa Group. As a German EU carrier, EU261/2004 applies to all Eurowings flights departing from EU airports and to Eurowings flights arriving in the EU from non-EU destinations.

Note: Eurowings and Eurowings Discover (formerly Condor's transatlantic arm, now part of Lufthansa Group) are separate carriers. Make sure you are filing against the correct operating carrier shown on your boarding pass.

For full EU261 eligibility rules, see the EU261 rights guide.

Compensation Amounts for Eurowings Delays

EU261 compensation for delays of 3+ hours at the final destination:

  • 250 euros: flights under 1,500 km

  • 400 euros: flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km

  • 600 euros: flights over 3,500 km

Eurowings primarily operates intra-European routes from German airports, most of which fall in the 250 or 400 euro tier. Eurowings Discover operates longer leisure routes including some transatlantic itineraries at the 600 euro tier.

How to File a Eurowings EU261 Claim

File through Eurowings' customer service portal at eurowings.com. Include your booking confirmation, flight number, departure date, and the actual arrival time at your final destination versus the scheduled arrival.

If Eurowings refuses or does not respond within 8 weeks, escalate to the German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA). The LBA is Germany's national enforcement body for EU261 and accepts complaints from passengers whose claims have been refused by German-based carriers.

Tip: Keep a record of all correspondence with Eurowings, including dates and any reference numbers. This documentation is essential if you escalate to the LBA or a claims service.

Eurowings and Extraordinary Circumstances

Eurowings may deny compensation citing extraordinary circumstances. Technical faults on Eurowings aircraft are generally not extraordinary under EU case law. ATC strikes, severe weather, and genuine security threats may qualify.

If Eurowings denies your claim, request the specific reason in writing. 'Operational reasons' or 'technical issues' without further explanation are not sufficient justification under EU261.
