Can You Claim Flight Compensation on Travel Insurance Too?

If your flight was disrupted, you may be wondering if you can claim both airline compensation and travel insurance benefits. The short answer: yes, in most cases, but the details matter. Here is how they interact.

They Cover Different Things

Airline compensation (EU261, DOT refunds) and travel insurance cover different types of losses. They are not mutually exclusive.

  • Airline compensation covers the flight disruption itself: refund of the ticket, fixed EU261 compensation (€250 to €600), and duty-of-care expenses.

  • Travel insurance covers consequential losses: non-refundable hotel bookings, missed event tickets, additional transport costs, and trip interruption expenses.

You can claim both. File your airline compensation claim (EU261 or DOT refund) AND file a travel insurance claim for expenses the airline does not cover. There is no double-dipping because they cover different costs.

What Travel Insurance Typically Covers

  • Trip interruption: Non-refundable reservations you lost due to the delay.

  • Additional transport: Taxis, rental cars, or alternative flights you had to book.

  • Delay expenses: Meals and hotel costs beyond what the airline provides.

  • Missed connections on separate tickets: Insurance covers gaps that airline compensation does not.

For what the airline owes you, see our refund guide and EU261 guide. For missed event compensation, read our missed event guide. Check your flight for airline compensation eligibility.

Important Coordination Rules

Some travel insurance policies have a "coordination of benefits" clause. This means the insurer may reduce your payout by the amount you received from the airline. Read your policy carefully. In general, EU261 fixed compensation (€250 to €600) is not deducted because it covers inconvenience, not financial loss. Airline-reimbursed expenses (meals, hotel) typically are deducted because the insurer will not pay for expenses already covered.
