They Cover Different Things
Airline compensation (EU261, DOT refunds) and travel insurance cover different types of losses. They are not mutually exclusive.

In general, EU261 fixed compensation (€250 to €600) is not deducted because it covers inconvenience, not financial loss. Airline-reimbursed expenses (meals, hotel) typically are deducted because the insurer will not pay for expenses already covered.
