Manchester Airport Delay: UK261 Rights for Northern England Travelers

Manchester Airport (MAN) is the UK's third-busiest airport and the primary hub for Northern England. When flights are delayed at MAN, UK261 (the UK equivalent of EU261) gives you rights to fixed cash compensation of up to GBP 520, care, and rebooking. This guide covers every right and how to claim it.
UK261 Rights at Manchester Airport: What You Are Owed
Manchester Airport (MAN) is a major UK departure point for package holidays, long-haul leisure routes, and European city breaks. All flights departing from MAN are covered by UK Regulation 261/2004 (UK261), which is the retained EU law equivalent of EU261 after Brexit. UK261 provides fixed cash compensation, care rights, and rebooking rights for delays, cancellations, and denied boarding.
Fixed compensation at MAN: Up to GBP 220 for short-haul delays, GBP 350 for medium-haul, and GBP 520 for long-haul delays of 3 or more hours at the final destination (or departure delay over 5 hours where you chose not to travel).
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is the UK enforcement body for UK261. CAA information is at caa.co.uk. Manchester Airport's own passenger services are at manchesterairport.co.uk. For the full EU261 framework that UK261 mirrors, see EU261 rights. For UK261 specifics, see UK261 rights.
UK261 Compensation Amounts at Manchester
UK261 compensation is fixed by distance, not by ticket price. All amounts are per passenger:
- ›
GBP 220: Flights up to 1,500 km (e.g., Manchester to Amsterdam, Manchester to Paris, Manchester to Dublin).
- ›
GBP 350: Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km (e.g., Manchester to Cairo, Manchester to Istanbul).
- ›
GBP 520: Flights over 3,500 km (e.g., Manchester to New York, Manchester to Dubai, Manchester to Cancun).
- ›
50% reduction: If the airline offers an alternative route that arrives within specific time windows (2 hours for short-haul, 3 hours for medium-haul, 4 hours for long-haul), compensation may be halved.
Compensation is triggered by a delay of 3 or more hours at the final destination (not the departure delay). So a flight that departs MAN 4 hours late but recovers time and arrives only 2.5 hours late does not trigger compensation.
Which Carriers Are Covered at Manchester?
UK261 covers flights departing from any UK airport (including MAN) on any airline. It also covers flights arriving at a UK airport on UK or EU-licensed carriers. At MAN:
- ›
TUI Airways, Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair departing MAN: Fully covered by UK261 regardless of destination.
- ›
Emirates, Qatar Airways, American Airlines departing MAN: Covered by UK261 because the departure is from a UK airport.
- ›
All carriers on all routes from MAN: UK261 applies at departure. The carrier's country of origin does not matter for MAN departures.
Post-Brexit note: After Brexit, UK261 and EU261 are separate instruments. An EU carrier (e.g., Ryanair, which is Irish-licensed) departing MAN is subject to UK261, not EU261. An easyJet flight from MAN to Amsterdam is UK261 on departure.
Care Rights at Manchester Airport
Regardless of compensation eligibility, UK261 Article 9 requires airlines at MAN to provide care when a delay or cancellation occurs:
- ›
Meals and refreshments: Proportionate to the waiting time. For a 2-hour delay, a meal voucher. For a 6-hour delay, at least two meal vouchers.
- ›
Two free communications: Phone calls, emails, or faxes.
- ›
Hotel accommodation: If the delay requires an overnight stay.
- ›
Transport between MAN and the hotel: Return transport provided.
These care rights apply even when compensation does not, for example when the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, ATC strikes, airport closures). Always request care at the airline desk regardless of delay cause.
Extraordinary Circumstances at MAN
UK261 has an extraordinary circumstances exception: airlines do not owe fixed cash compensation if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures. What qualifies:
- ›
Extraordinary: Severe weather (not routine fog), ATC strike, bird strike causing major damage, security incident, medical emergency onboard.
- ›
Not extraordinary: Mechanical failure (most aircraft faults are within the airline's control), crew scheduling failures, late inbound aircraft from a previous flight (generally), technical issues known in advance.
Airlines frequently over-apply the extraordinary circumstances defense. If Jet2 or TUI claims weather for a delay that was actually caused by a late arriving aircraft, challenge the claim. Use TravelStacks to assess your eligibility. Check the UK CAA's guidance at caa.co.uk for current guidance on extraordinary circumstances.
How to File a UK261 Claim From Manchester
The UK261 claim process from MAN:
- 1
File a written UK261 compensation claim directly with the airline. Reference UK Regulation 261/2004 (as retained in UK law) and state the exact delay duration and your final destination.
- 2
Include your boarding pass, booking confirmation, and any delay notification from the airline.
- 3
Airlines have 14 days to respond under CAA guidance. If they deny or ignore the claim, escalate.
- 4
Use an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme. The main aviation ADR schemes approved by the CAA include CEDR, PACT, and AviationADR. ADR is free for passengers.
- 5
If ADR fails, pursue in the county court (England and Wales) or sheriff court (Scotland). UK261 claims are straightforward small claims. Court fees are low and you may recover them if you win.

UK261 vs. EU261: Key Differences for MAN Travelers
UK261 and EU261 are nearly identical but with some practical differences:
- ›
Currency: UK261 amounts are in GBP; EU261 amounts are in EUR. GBP 520 vs. EUR 600 for long-haul.
- ›
Enforcement: UK CAA enforces UK261; national bodies in each EU member state enforce EU261.
- ›
Post-Brexit coverage: A flight from MAN to Amsterdam on easyJet is subject to UK261 on departure. The return from Amsterdam to MAN on easyJet is subject to EU261 on departure (Amsterdam is an EU airport on an EU-licensed carrier).
- ›
Limitation period: UK261 claims are generally subject to a 6-year limitation period in England and Wales (general contract law). EU261 periods vary by member state.
