Ryanair Denied Boarding: What EU261 Entitles You To
If Ryanair refuses to let you board a confirmed flight against your will, EU Regulation 261/2004 provides immediate cash compensation plus the choice between a full refund or rebooking on the next available flight. Denied boarding is one of the most clearly protected scenarios under EU261, and Ryanair cannot reduce or waive this entitlement.
Important distinction: Denied boarding (involuntary bumping) triggers full EU261 rights. If YOU voluntarily gave up your seat in exchange for benefits offered by Ryanair, different rules apply. Ryanair must first ask for volunteers before involuntarily bumping passengers. If you were the last to check in and bumped without being asked to volunteer, that is involuntary. Ryanair is an EU carrier headquartered in Ireland. All Ryanair flights departing from EU airports are fully covered by EU261. Ryanair flights from UK airports are covered by retained UK261 legislation with identical compensation amounts.
What Qualifies as Denied Boarding Under EU261
Article 2(j) of EU261 defines denied boarding as a refusal to carry passengers on a flight for which they hold a confirmed reservation, have checked in on time, and hold required travel documents, except where there are reasonable grounds to deny boarding such as health, safety, or inadequate travel documents. Under EU261, denied boarding includes:

Overbooking: Ryanair sold more seats than the aircraft has. You checked in on time but there is no seat available for you.

Operational downgrades: Ryanair substitutes a smaller aircraft and cannot accommodate all confirmed passengers.
- ›
Administrative bumping: Ryanair removes you for operational reasons unrelated to your conduct.
- ›
Late gate changes or boarding errors: If Ryanair's system or gate agent prevents you from boarding a flight you were eligible for.
Denied boarding does NOT include situations where you were refused boarding because you arrived late at the gate, lacked required travel documents, or were removed for safety or security reasons. In those cases, EU261 compensation does not apply.
Compensation Amounts for Ryanair Bumping
For involuntary denied boarding, EU261 Article 7 sets fixed compensation based on flight distance:

250 EUR: All intra-EU flights under 1,500 km
- ›
400 EUR: Intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
- ›
600 EUR: Flights over 3,500 km
Reduction rule: If Ryanair rebooks you on an alternative flight and you arrive at your final destination within 2 hours of your original arrival time (for flights under 3,500 km) or within 4 hours (for longer flights), Ryanair may reduce the compensation by 50%. If you arrive more than 2 or 4 hours late respectively, the full amount applies.
These are the minimum amounts. If you were bumped at the gate and incurred real losses (missed connection, hotel, transport), you may also be able to recover those costs separately under Article 12 or national law, in addition to the fixed EU261 amount.
Immediate Rights When Bumped by Ryanair
At the moment Ryanair denies you boarding, EU261 Article 8 gives you three immediate choices:

Reimbursement: A full refund of your ticket price paid, plus a return flight to your original departure point if relevant. Ryanair must process this within 7 days.
- ›
Re-routing as soon as possible: Ryanair must put you on the next available flight to your destination at no extra cost.
- ›
Re-routing at a later date: You can choose to travel at a later date that suits you, at the same fare conditions.
In addition, Ryanair must immediately provide duty of care: meals and refreshments proportionate to the wait time, two free phone calls or emails, and if the rebooked flight departs the next day, hotel accommodation and transport to and from the hotel. These are owed immediately at the gate, not later.
How to File a Denied Boarding Claim Against Ryanair
Ryanair has an online EU261 claim form on its website. Filing directly is always the first step:

Visit Ryanair.com and search for 'EU261 claim' or navigate to Help and then Flight Disruption Claims.

Enter your booking reference, flight number, date, and select 'Denied Boarding' as the claim type.

Upload your boarding pass (or evidence you were checked in and at the gate on time) and booking confirmation.

State clearly that you are claiming EU261 Article 4 denied boarding compensation and specify the amount.

Submit and note the claim reference. Ryanair is expected to respond within 6-8 weeks.
Gather evidence at the gate: photograph the departure board showing your flight, ask the gate agent for a written confirmation that you were denied boarding and the reason, and keep any 'bumped' notification Ryanair issued.
When Ryanair Refuses to Pay and How to Escalate
Ryanair has a track record of disputing denied boarding claims by reclassifying bumping as a 'voluntary' arrangement or claiming the passenger did not check in on time. Here is how to fight back:

Document your check-in. Screenshot your mobile boarding pass and the check-in confirmation with its timestamp. Ryanair's online check-in system timestamps these records.

Gather gate witnesses. If other passengers saw you denied boarding, note their contact details.

Request Ryanair's operational records. Ask for the load factor (number of passengers) on the specific flight and the aircraft type that operated it. Overbooking evidence is powerful.

Escalate to the national enforcement body. For flights from Ireland, contact the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR). For flights from other EU countries, contact the relevant NEB.
