Spring Break Flight Delays: What Parents Need to Know

Traveling with children during spring break adds complexity to flight disruptions. Families need to stay together during rebookings, children have specific needs during delays, and parents should know the rules around car seats, strollers, and unaccompanied minors.

Keeping Families Together

When a flight is cancelled and the airline rebooks you, there is a risk that family members end up on different flights. Airlines should keep families together, especially when children are involved, but it does not always happen automatically.

Tell the agent you are traveling with children. When requesting rebooking, explicitly state that all family members must be on the same flight. Airlines prioritize keeping families together when asked, but they may split you up if they are not aware.

Children's Rights During Delays

Children who have their own ticket (including infants with a seat) are entitled to the same compensation as adults: the same DOT refund, the same EU261 compensation amounts. A family of four (two adults, two children) on a delayed transatlantic EU flight can claim €2,400 (4 x €600).

Lap infants (traveling without a separate seat) generally do not qualify for EU261 compensation because they do not have a ticket. However, any taxes paid for a lap infant should be refunded if the flight is cancelled. For more on traveling with babies during cancellations, see our baby and toddler guide.

Practical Tips for Parents

  1. 1

Pack essentials in carry-on. Diapers, formula, medications, and snacks should be in your carry-on, not checked bag.

  2. 2

Know your stroller gate-check rights. Gate-checked strollers should be returned at the aircraft door, not baggage claim.

  3. 3

Car seat policies vary. If the airline rebooks you on a different aircraft type, confirm your car seat fits the new seat width.

  4. 4

Keep children entertained. Download offline content on tablets before traveling. Airport delays with bored children are exponentially harder.

  5. 5

Ask for family boarding. Some airlines offer priority boarding for families during disruptions.

Compensation for Family Trips

Family travel compensation can be substantial. Every ticketed passenger, including children, is entitled to compensation. File claims for all family members on the booking. For DOT rights, the refund covers the full amount paid. For EU261, each ticketed person gets the full distance-based amount.

Spring break travel advice: book refundable hotels and car rentals when possible, as cancellation cascades can affect your entire trip. For the full refund process, see our refund guide. For what to do at the airport, see our cancellation guide. Check your flight for eligibility.
