Sun Country Denied Boarding: What You Are Owed

Sun Country denied boarding compensation follows the DOT formula: 200 percent of one-way fare up to $1,075, 400 percent up to $2,150. Sun Country's limited frequency makes involuntary bumps less common than at hub carriers but consequential when they happen. Here is the 2026 math.

Sun Country DBC Formula

Sun Country denied boarding compensation follows 14 CFR 250.5. Standard DOT tiers:

  • 1 to 2 hour late arrival (domestic): 200 percent of one-way fare, capped at $1,075.

  • More than 2 hour late arrival (domestic): 400 percent of one-way fare, capped at $2,150.

  • Within 1 hour of scheduled: no compensation owed.

  • International 1 to 4 hour late: 200 percent, $1,075 cap.

  • International over 4 hours late: 400 percent, $2,150 cap.

Frequency and Cascade Risk

Sun Country's limited daily frequency means an involuntary bump often cascades to next-day or worse. A bump on a once-daily route can easily generate the 400 percent compensation ($2,150 cap) because arrival is typically 24+ hours late.

Once-daily route math: if Sun Country bumps you from the 8 AM MSP-LAS flight and the next Sun Country flight is tomorrow, arrival is 24+ hours late. 400 percent of fare applies. If your fare was over $538, the $2,150 cap applies.

Voluntary vs Involuntary

  • Voluntary (you agreed): compensation is whatever Sun Country offered. Typically credit voucher of $200 to $500. DOT formula does not apply.

  • Involuntary (you did not agree): DOT formula applies. Often at the $2,150 cap due to frequency-cascade arrival times.

Run the cap math before volunteering. A $500 voluntary voucher vs a likely $1,500 to $2,150 involuntary payout is an easy decision. Sun Country's voluntary offers are usually well below the involuntary cap exposure.

Cash vs Credit Voucher

DOT requires cash on involuntary bumps. Sun Country may offer credit vouchers at higher face value. Calculate:

  • $1,500 credit voucher vs $1,075 cash: voucher at 70 percent effective = $1,050. Cash wins narrowly.

  • $2,500 credit voucher vs $1,075 cash: voucher at 70 percent = $1,750. Voucher wins, but only if you have Sun Country travel plans in the 12-month window.

  • $2,500 credit voucher vs $2,150 cash: voucher at 70 percent = $1,750. Cash wins.
