United Airlines 24-Hour Cancellation Rule: Refunds and Exceptions

United Airlines must offer a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, provided the ticket was purchased at least 7 days before departure. Basic Economy fares have post-window restrictions. This guide covers every scenario, the refund process, and what to do if United refuses.

United Airlines 24-Hour Cancellation Policy

United Airlines 24-Hour Policy: Under federal DOT rules, United must refund your ticket in full if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, provided the ticket was purchased at least 7 days before the flight's departure date. The refund goes back to your original payment method, with no cancellation fee.

The 24-hour cancellation rule is a federal requirement under 14 CFR Part 259, and United Airlines as a US carrier must comply. The rule provides a risk-free window for travelers to cancel shortly after booking, allowing time to verify travel plans, catch booking errors, or compare prices. United Airlines calls this its '24-hour flexible booking policy.'

  • Window: 24 hours from the time of purchase.

  • Condition: Ticket must be purchased at least 7 days before the scheduled departure.

  • Refund: Full purchase price to original payment method.

  • No fees: United cannot charge a cancellation fee within this window.

  • All fare types: Economy, Business, and First Class are covered. Basic Economy has post-window restrictions.

The DOT Rule: Why Airlines Must Offer This

The DOT's 24-hour rule is codified in 14 CFR Part 259 and applies to all US carriers and all foreign airlines selling tickets for US-origin, US-destination, or US-operated flights. The rule requires airlines to offer either: (1) a free cancellation within 24 hours of purchase, or (2) a 24-hour hold option without payment. United Airlines offers the cancellation option.

This rule is separate from the DOT's newer 2024 cash refund requirements for airline-initiated cancellations and significant schedule changes. The 24-hour rule specifically covers passenger-initiated cancellations in the brief window after booking. For a complete overview of US DOT passenger rights, see the dedicated guide.

Which United Tickets Are Covered

  • Economy (standard non-refundable): Fully covered within 24 hours. Cancel for a full refund.

  • Economy (refundable): Covered within 24 hours. Cancellations after 24 hours are also refundable under standard fare rules.

  • Economy Plus: Covered.

  • Business Class (Polaris): Covered.

  • First Class: Covered.

  • Basic Economy: Covered within 24 hours under DOT law. After 24 hours: no changes, no cancellations, no credit. See next section.

  • MileagePlus award tickets: Within 24 hours, cancel for miles redeposit and refund of any taxes and fees.

Basic Economy Exclusions

United's Basic Economy fares are the most restrictive ticket type. Within the 24-hour window, the DOT rule requires United to offer a free cancellation even on Basic Economy. After the 24-hour window, Basic Economy tickets have no cancellation or change rights. Unlike standard Economy, there is no travel credit option: you forfeit the entire fare.

Basic Economy after 24 hours: If you booked a United Basic Economy ticket and the 24-hour window has passed, the ticket has no value unless you fly. There is no credit, no exchange, and no refund. This is fundamentally more restrictive than standard non-refundable Economy, which can be exchanged for a credit.

Award and MileagePlus Miles Tickets

MileagePlus award tickets can be canceled within the 24-hour window with miles redeposited to your account and all taxes and fees refunded to your payment method. After the 24-hour window, standard MileagePlus award change and redeposit policies apply. United Premier members (Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K) typically have reduced or waived redeposit fees.

  • Within 24 hours: Miles redeposited, taxes refunded, no redeposit fee.

  • After 24 hours, non-status member: Redeposit fee may apply (currently $125 for most award tickets).

  • After 24 hours, Premier Gold and above: Waived redeposit fees.

  • After 24 hours, Premier 1K: Unlimited complimentary award changes and redeposits.

Refund Timeline After Cancellation

Under the DOT's 2024 refund rules, United must process refunds within 7 business days for credit card purchases and within 20 calendar days for cash and check payments. In practice, refunds often appear on credit card statements within 5 to 10 business days, though your bank's processing time also affects the final appearance date.

  • Credit card: 7 business days processing. May take additional days to appear on your statement.

  • Debit card: 7 business day rule applies. May appear faster or slower.

  • Cash or check: 20 calendar days.

  • If United is slow to refund: Contact United with your cancellation confirmation and escalate to the DOT if the refund exceeds the legal timeline.

What If United Is Slow to Refund

If United does not process your refund within 7 business days (for credit card purchases), file a complaint with the US Department of Transportation. The DOT monitors refund compliance and can fine airlines for violations. File at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

You can also dispute the charge with your credit card company if United fails to refund. Most credit card issuers handle airline refund disputes under the Fair Credit Billing Act. Provide the cancellation confirmation as evidence.

United's FlexiPerk and Other Paid Flexibility Options

Beyond the mandatory 24-hour rule, United offers paid flexibility add-ons. Refundable fares are available for all classes at a higher price point. Premier members also receive complimentary change waivers for many situations. If you need flexibility beyond the 24-hour window, consider purchasing a refundable fare rather than relying on the 24-hour rule.

  • Refundable fares: Cancel at any time before departure for a full refund. No time window applies.

  • United Premier Status: Premier Gold and above receive complimentary same-day change options and change fee waivers on many routes.

  • Trip protection (travel insurance): United sells trip protection at checkout that covers cancellation for specific covered reasons after the 24-hour window.

When United Cancels Your Flight: Additional Rights

When United cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change (such as a departure time shift of 3 or more hours under the new DOT 2024 rules), you are entitled to a full cash refund of the unused ticket, regardless of fare type and regardless of whether the 24-hour window has closed. You do not have to accept a travel credit, rebooking, or future flight voucher.

For the full overview of airline-initiated cancellation rights, see the US DOT passenger rights guide and the new DOT rules 2024. For general guidance on how to get a refund from an airline, see the complete refund guide.

Filing a DOT Complaint If United Won't Refund

  • File at transportation.gov/airconsumer: Submit a consumer complaint specifying that United failed to honor the 24-hour cancellation rule.

  • Include: Your cancellation confirmation, the booking reference, the original purchase date, the cancellation timestamp, and any correspondence with United refusing the refund.

  • Credit card dispute: As a backup, dispute the charge with your credit card issuer under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

  • Small claims court: For amounts within your state's limit, small claims court is an accessible last resort against United.

Common Mistakes on 24-Hour Cancellations

  • Booking fewer than 7 days before departure: The 24-hour rule requires 7-day advance purchase. Last-minute bookings are not covered.

  • Canceling after exactly 24 hours: Airlines measure the window from the exact purchase timestamp. Cancel with time to spare.

  • Not saving the cancellation confirmation: Without a timestamp, proving when you canceled is difficult.

  • Accepting a credit instead of cash: Within the 24-hour window, you are entitled to a cash refund. Reject credit offers.

  • Expecting Basic Economy flexibility after 24 hours: After the window, Basic Economy is entirely forfeit.
