The United MileagePlus Explorer Card from Chase includes trip delay reimbursement, trip cancellation insurance, and baggage delay protection. This guide explains the specific coverage limits, delay thresholds, how to file claims, and when United's own airline obligations also apply.
United Explorer Card: Travel Protection Overview
The United MileagePlus Explorer Card is Chase's entry-level United co-branded card, with a $95 annual fee. Despite its moderate price point, it includes several travel protection benefits that can be valuable when United flights are delayed or cancelled. The card is administered by Chase and benefits are underwritten by third-party insurers.
Key benefit numbers: Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket for delays of 12 or more hours or requiring an overnight stay. Trip cancellation/interruption insurance: up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip. Baggage delay: up to $100 per day for 3 days ($300 max) for delays of 6 or more hours.
These benefits supplement, but do not replace, United Airlines' own obligations under US DOT passenger rights. For EU-departing United flights, EU261 also applies separately. For the full airline refund process, see how to get a refund from your airline.
Trip Delay Reimbursement: Details and Threshold
The United Explorer Card's trip delay reimbursement triggers at 12 hours of delay or if an overnight stay is required. This is a common threshold for entry-level travel cards (same as Delta SkyMiles Gold) and higher than premium cards like Chase Sapphire Reserve (6 hours).
- ›
Maximum: $500 per purchased ticket.
- ›
Covered expenses: Meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal items needed during the delay.
- ›
Who is covered: The primary cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children under 22.
- ›
Trigger requirement: The covered trip must be purchased with the United Explorer Card. United flights purchased with another card are not covered by this benefit.
- ›
Filing deadline: Must file within 60 days of the delay event. Late filing results in denial.
The $500 per ticket limit is the same as Chase Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred, which is a relatively strong cap for an entry-level card. The 12-hour threshold is the limitation. If United delays your flight by 10 hours but does not require an overnight stay, the benefit does not trigger. If the same 10-hour delay extends past midnight, it does require an overnight stay and the benefit triggers.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
- ›
Coverage amounts: Up to $1,500 per person per trip for cancellation; $1,500 per person for interruption. $6,000 total per trip.
- ›
Covered events: Illness or injury with a physician's statement, death of a covered person or immediate family member, severe weather that makes travel impossible, jury duty, job loss (with restrictions), mandatory evacuation.
- ›
Non-refundable costs: Reimburses prepaid, non-refundable expenses for common carrier transportation and accommodations.
- ›
Pre-existing conditions: Subject to a look-back period. Conditions treated within 60 days before the trip may not be covered.
The $1,500 per person limit is lower than premium cards (Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve cover up to $10,000 per trip). For high-cost international trips with significant non-refundable hotel and tour deposits, the Explorer Card's cancellation limit may be insufficient. Consider a standalone travel insurance policy for high-value trips.
Baggage Delay and Lost Luggage
- ›
Baggage delay: Up to $100 per day for 3 days (maximum $300) when checked bags are delayed 6 or more hours by the carrier.
- ›
Covered expenses during delay: Reasonable purchases for clothing, toiletries, and other essential personal items.
- ›
Lost luggage: The Explorer Card includes lost luggage reimbursement up to $3,000 per passenger for carry-on bags and $3,000 per passenger for checked bags. This is primary coverage, not secondary, on the Explorer Card.
- ›
Documentation: File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with United at the airport. The PIR is required for both the airline claim and the card benefit claim.
Note: the $3,000 lost luggage limit on the Explorer Card is notably generous and actually higher than the Amex Platinum's checked bag limit ($2,000). The $100/day baggage delay cap is typical for entry-level cards.
United's Own Obligations vs Card Benefits
When a United flight is delayed, two sets of protections apply: United's statutory obligations and the Explorer Card's insurance benefits.
- ›
US DOT rules: United must refund you if your flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel. For delays of 3 hours or more (domestic) or 6 hours or more (international), United must offer a refund. United also voluntarily commits to meal vouchers and hotel accommodations for controllable delays.
- ›
Explorer Card benefits: Reimburse your out-of-pocket expenses during the delay. If United provides meal vouchers, deduct those amounts from your card claim.
- ›
Stacking: You can receive a meal voucher from United AND a hotel cost reimbursement from the Explorer Card for the same delay, provided the total does not exceed your actual out-of-pocket losses.
For United flights departing EU airports (London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris), EU261 also applies and United must pay fixed cash compensation of 250 to 600 EUR per passenger for qualifying delays. This is paid by United, separate from the card benefit. File EU261 claims at TravelStacks.
Filing a Trip Delay Claim on the Explorer Card
- 1
Confirm the delay is 12 hours or more, or that an overnight stay was required.
- 2
Access the Chase benefits portal at chase.com/cardbenefits or call the number on the back of your card. Trip delay claims are administered by a third-party insurer.
- 3
Provide your booking confirmation showing the Explorer Card was used, the United flight details, evidence of the delay (United app notification or flight tracking screenshot), and itemized receipts for all claimed expenses.
- 4
File within 60 days of the delay event.
- 5
Receive a decision within 15 to 30 business days.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov is the primary US regulatory body overseeing credit card benefit disclosures and complaint resolution. If the claim administrator wrongly denies your claim, the CFPB accepts complaints about credit card benefit practices. For United airline-side complaints about refunds, the US Department of Transportation at transportation.gov handles airline consumer complaints.
Explorer Card vs United Quest and United Club: Coverage Comparison
- ›
United Explorer ($95/year): Trip delay at 12 hours/$500; cancellation $1,500/person; no lounge access.
- ›
United Quest ($250/year): Trip delay at 12 hours/$500; cancellation $1,500/person; same protections but higher miles-earning rate.
- ›
United Club Infinite ($525/year): Trip delay at 6 hours/$500; cancellation $10,000/trip; United Club lounge access. Better trip delay threshold and dramatically better cancellation coverage.
For travelers who are significantly delayed more than once per year, upgrading to the United Club Infinite for the 6-hour threshold and $10,000 cancellation coverage may be worthwhile. The Explorer Card is best for occasional United travelers who want basic protection without a high annual fee.
