What American passengers are entitled to

Under US DOT rules, your rights don’t depend on the reason for the disruption — they’re the law.

Refund

100%

If American cancels your flight or delays it significantly and you choose not to travel, DOT requires American to refund you to your original payment method — not a voucher or travel credit. This applies regardless of ticket type, including Basic Economy.

Expense reimbursement

For controllable delays, American's Customer Commitment covers meal vouchers for extended delays and hotel accommodation for controllable overnight situations. Keep all receipts — these are reimbursable even when DOT cash compensation doesn't apply.

Denied boarding (IDB)

Up to $1,950

If American involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay to the destination.

EU261 / UK261 may also apply

If your American flight departed from an EU or UK airport, EU261 or UK261 entitles you to up to €600 / £520 per passenger for delays of 3+ hours — regardless of the reason, with limited exceptions for extraordinary circumstances.

American’s claims process

Where to file

Note

American has no separate compensation form — all non-refund claims (reimbursement, denied boarding, EU261) must be submitted via the Customer Relations form. Frame every claim as a formal written complaint requesting specific compensation. A mailing address is required even for online submissions.

Or let TravelStacks handle it for you.

We file directly with American, follow up, and escalate if needed. You don’t touch a form.

Typical response time

Refunds: 7 business days to credit/debit cards, up to 20 days for cash purchases. Customer Relations complaints: 5–7 business days for a case number; resolution varies 2–6 weeks.

American compensation — frequently asked questions

How long do American Airlines refunds take?

DOT requires American to process refunds within 7 business days for card payments and 20 calendar days for cash purchases. If your refund hasn't arrived after that window, American is in violation of DOT rules — you can file a DOT complaint or let TravelStacks escalate on your behalf.

What if American Airlines offers a voucher instead of a cash refund?

You are not required to accept a voucher or travel credit. For canceled or significantly delayed flights, DOT requires American to refund to your original payment method. If American only offers a travel credit, reject it and formally request a cash refund. TravelStacks can file that request.

Can I get compensation for an American Airlines delay?

Under US DOT rules, American is not required to pay fixed cash compensation for delays or cancellations. However, you're entitled to a full refund if you choose not to travel, plus expense reimbursement for controllable delays. If your flight departed from or arrived into Europe or the UK, EU261 or UK261 may also entitle you to up to €600 / £520 per passenger.

Does American Airlines have a separate compensation form?

No — American uses a single Customer Relations form (aa.com/contact/forms?topic=CR) for all non-refund claims, including reimbursement, denied boarding, and EU261 compensation. There is no dedicated compensation form. Claims must be submitted as formal written complaints. TravelStacks handles this framing and follow-up for you.

What is American's denied boarding compensation?

If American involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay reaching your destination. American must pay at the gate or within 24 hours. If they refuse, file a DOT complaint — the obligation is statutory.

Does EU261 apply to American Airlines flights?

EU261 applies to American Airlines flights departing from an EU airport, regardless of destination. It does not apply to AA flights arriving into the EU from the US. UK261 applies to departures from UK airports. If eligible, compensation can be up to €600 / £520 for delays of 3 hours or more.
