Practical filing window for refund and reimbursement claims.

2-6 years

Varies by EU country. France: 5yr. Germany: 3yr. Netherlands: 2yr.

What British Airways passengers are entitled to

Under US DOT rules, your rights do not depend on the reason for the disruption. They are the law.

EU261 / UK261 may also apply

If your British Airways flight departed from an EU or UK airport, EU261 or UK261 entitles you to up to €600 / £520 per passenger for delays of 3 or more hours, regardless of the reason, with limited exceptions for extraordinary circumstances.

Refund

100%

If British Airways cancels or significantly delays your flight and you choose not to travel, UK261 or EU261 requires a full cash refund within 7 days. On US-route flights, US DOT rules also entitle you to a cash refund regardless of fare class.

Expense reimbursement

For delays of 2 or more hours, British Airways must provide meals and refreshments proportionate to the wait. Overnight delays require hotel accommodation and transport. For US-route disruptions, BA's own customer commitment provides additional duty-of-care coverage. Keep all receipts.

Denied boarding (IDB)

Up to $1,950

If British Airways involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay to the destination.

How to claim compensation from British Airways

  1. Check your eligibility

Find your British Airways flight number and date. Significant delays (3+ hours) and cancellations where you chose not to travel qualify for a refund. Denied boarding due to overbooking qualifies for cash compensation.

  2. Gather your documents

You need your booking confirmation or e-ticket number, the flight number and date, any receipts for out-of-pocket expenses (meals, hotel, transport), and your boarding pass if you have it.

  3. Submit to British Airways

Use British Airways's online form to submit your refund or reimbursement claim. Be specific: state the DOT rule, the amount owed, and your original payment method. Vague requests get ignored.

  4. Follow up and escalate if needed

If British Airways ignores your claim, sends a form denial, or offers a voucher instead of cash, you have options. File a complaint with the DOT at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Most airlines respond once a federal complaint is filed.

What to have ready

  • Booking confirmation or e-ticket
  • Flight number and date
  • Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Boarding pass (if available)

Typical response time

British Airways responds to claims within 4 to 8 weeks. If you have not received a decision after 8 weeks, you are entitled to escalate to an ADR body without further waiting.

Note

For UK departures, UK261 applies and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) enforces compliance. For EU departures, EU261 applies via the relevant National Enforcement Body. British Airways also flies transatlantic routes where US DOT rules apply simultaneously. If BA denies your claim, escalate to CEDR or AviationADR (UK) or your country's NEB (EU).

Or skip all this.

TravelStacks files directly with British Airways, follows up when they go quiet, escalates denials, and files regulatory complaints when needed. You do not touch a form.
