2-6 years

Varies by EU country. France: 5yr. Germany: 3yr. Netherlands: 2yr.

What Norwegian passengers are entitled to

Under US DOT rules, your rights do not depend on the reason for the disruption. They are the law.

EU261 / UK261 may also apply

If your Norwegian flight departed from an EU or UK airport, EU261 or UK261 entitles you to up to €600 / £520 per passenger for delays of 3 or more hours, regardless of the reason, with limited exceptions for extraordinary circumstances.

Refund

100%

If Norwegian cancels or significantly delays your flight and you choose not to travel, EU261 or UK261 requires a full cash refund within 7 days. Norwegian also operates US transatlantic routes where DOT refund rights apply.

Expense reimbursement

EU261 requires Norwegian to provide meals, refreshments, and communications for delays of 2 or more hours. Overnight disruptions require accommodation and airport transport. These obligations apply even when extraordinary circumstances reduce or eliminate fixed compensation.

Denied boarding (IDB)

Up to $1,950

If Norwegian involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay to the destination.

How to claim compensation from Norwegian

  1. Check your eligibility

Find your Norwegian flight number and date. Significant delays (3+ hours) and cancellations where you chose not to travel qualify for a refund. Denied boarding due to overbooking qualifies for cash compensation.

  2. Gather your documents

You need your booking confirmation or e-ticket number, the flight number and date, any receipts for out-of-pocket expenses (meals, hotel, transport), and your boarding pass if you have it.

  3. Submit to Norwegian

Use Norwegian's online form to submit your refund or reimbursement claim. Be specific: state the DOT rule, the amount owed, and your original payment method. Vague requests get ignored.

  4. Follow up and escalate if needed

If Norwegian ignores your claim, sends a form denial, or offers a voucher instead of cash, you have options. File a complaint with the DOT at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Most airlines respond once a federal complaint is filed.

What to have ready

  • Booking confirmation or e-ticket
  • Flight number and date
  • Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Boarding pass (if available)

Typical response time

Norwegian typically responds within 4 to 6 weeks. Complex cases or escalations to National Enforcement Bodies add 3 to 6 months.

Note

Norwegian operates under multiple AOC holders across Scandinavia and the EU. For UK departures, UK261 applies and the CAA enforces compliance. For EU departures, the relevant National Enforcement Body handles complaints. Norwegian also operates transatlantic flights from the UK and EU where DOT refund rights apply on US routes.

Or skip all this.

TravelStacks files directly with Norwegian, follows up when they go quiet, escalates denials, and files regulatory complaints when needed. You do not touch a form.
