Spirit Airlines Flight Canceled or Delayed?
You May Still Be Owed a Refund.
Spirit's low fares don't reduce your DOT rights. If Spirit canceled or significantly delayed your flight, you may be entitled to a full cash refund — we check and file for you.

What Spirit passengers are entitled to
Under US DOT rules, your rights don’t depend on the reason for the disruption — they’re the law.
Refund
100%
If Spirit cancels your flight or significantly delays it and you choose not to travel, DOT requires a full refund to your original payment method. Spirit may offer a credit or voucher instead — you are not required to accept it. Your DOT rights apply regardless of fare type.
Expense reimbursement
Spirit's Customer Commitment for expense reimbursement is more limited than legacy carriers. For controllable delays, Spirit may provide meal vouchers. Keep receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses and submit through Spirit's customer support portal selecting 'Claim a refund or compensation'.
Denied boarding (IDB)
Up to $1,950
If Spirit involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay to the destination.

Or let TravelStacks handle it for you.
We file directly with Spirit, follow up, and escalate if needed. You don’t touch a form.
Typical response time
Refund requests: 7–20 business days. Spirit's initial response is often a denial or delay — follow-up and escalation are frequently required to receive a cash refund.

Spirit compensation — frequently asked questions
Am I entitled to a refund if Spirit cancels my flight?
Yes. DOT rules require Spirit to refund you to your original payment method if Spirit cancels your flight or significantly delays it and you choose not to travel. Spirit's ultra-low fares do not reduce your passenger rights. Spirit may offer a credit — you are not required to accept it.
How long do Spirit Airlines refunds take?
Spirit is required to process refunds within 7 business days for card payments and 20 days for other payment methods. Spirit has a history of slow refund processing and initial denials — if your refund is delayed beyond those windows, TravelStacks can escalate to the DOT.
What if Spirit offers a credit instead of a cash refund?
You do not have to accept a credit or voucher for a DOT-qualifying cancellation or significant delay. DOT requires a cash refund to your original payment method. Reject the credit offer and formally request a refund. TravelStacks can file that request and follow up if Spirit doesn't comply.
What is Spirit's denied boarding (bumping) policy?
If Spirit involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $1,950 depending on your delay reaching your destination. Spirit must rebook you on the next available flight at no charge. Request payment at the gate — if refused, TravelStacks can file the claim.
Can Spirit charge me for rebooking after a cancellation?
No. If Spirit cancels your flight, they must rebook you on their next available flight at no extra charge, or provide a full refund if you prefer not to travel. Spirit cannot charge you a change fee or fare difference for a rebooking caused by a Spirit-initiated cancellation.
