What Wizz Air passengers are entitled to
Under US DOT rules, your rights do not depend on the reason for the disruption. They are the law.
EU261 / UK261 may also apply
If your Wizz Air flight departed from an EU or UK airport, EU261 or UK261 entitles you to up to €600 / £520 per passenger for delays of 3 or more hours, regardless of the reason, with limited exceptions for extraordinary circumstances.
Refund
100%
If Wizz Air cancels or significantly delays your flight and you choose not to travel, EU261 requires a full cash refund within 7 days. Wizz Air cannot substitute a Wizz credit voucher without your explicit consent.
Expense reimbursement
For delays of 2 hours or more, Wizz Air must provide meals, refreshments, and communications. Overnight delays require accommodation and airport transport. These duty-of-care obligations apply even when Wizz Air claims extraordinary circumstances.
Denied boarding (IDB)
Up to $700
If Wizz Air involuntarily bumps you from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $700 depending on your delay to the destination.
How to claim compensation from Wizz Air
Check your eligibility
Find your Wizz Air flight number and date. Significant delays (3+ hours) and cancellations where you chose not to travel qualify for a refund. Denied boarding due to overbooking qualifies for cash compensation.
Gather your documents
You need your booking confirmation or e-ticket number, the flight number and date, any receipts for out-of-pocket expenses (meals, hotel, transport), and your boarding pass if you have it.
Submit to Wizz Air
Use Wizz Air's online form to submit your refund or reimbursement claim. Be specific: state the DOT rule, the amount owed, and your original payment method. Vague requests get ignored.
Follow up and escalate if needed
If Wizz Air ignores your claim, sends a form denial, or offers a voucher instead of cash, you have options. File a complaint with the DOT at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Most airlines respond once a federal complaint is filed.
What to have ready
- ✓Booking confirmation or e-ticket
- ✓Flight number and date
- ✓Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses
- ✓Boarding pass (if available)
Typical response time
Wizz Air typically responds within 4 to 8 weeks. Escalation to a National Enforcement Body or ADR scheme adds 3 to 6 months. Persistence is often required to secure payment.
Note
Wizz Air is a Hungarian carrier headquartered in Budapest. For UK-departure flights, UK261 applies and the UK CAA or AviationADR handles escalations. For EU-departure flights, the relevant National Enforcement Body for the country of departure handles complaints. Wizz Air has a high initial denial rate; escalation to regulators is frequently required.
