Allegiant Refund Policy 2026: What Actually Applies
Allegiant's refund policy in 2026 is the most restrictive among major US carriers, but the DOT final rule overrides most of it when Allegiant is the cause of the disruption. Here is what applies, what Allegiant still tries to get away with, and how to force compliance.
Allegiant's Refund Rule Stack in 2026
Allegiant Air operates under three rule layers: federal DOT rules (always apply), Allegiant's own ticket terms (apply for voluntary changes), and Trip Flex add-on (optional passenger-side flexibility). Knowing which rule is in play determines whether your refund is mandatory, fee-subject, or entirely at Allegiant's discretion.
- ›
DOT-mandated refund: applies when Allegiant cancels or significantly changes the flight.
- ›
24-hour cancellation: applies to tickets booked 7+ days before departure, direct from Allegiant.
- ›
Trip Flex: add-on purchase, allows one voluntary change or cancellation.
- ›
Default ticket rules: all other voluntary changes incur fees or are non-refundable.
DOT rules override Allegiant's ticket terms when Allegiant caused the disruption. Non-refundable Saver fares are still refundable to cash when Allegiant cancels the flight.
The DOT-Mandated Refund
Under the DOT final rule (October 2024), Allegiant must refund to original payment method when:
- 1
Allegiant cancels the flight.
- 2
Allegiant significantly changes: departure/arrival time by 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international).
- 3
Allegiant changes the airport (departure or arrival).
- 4
Allegiant adds or changes connections.
- 5
Allegiant downgrades your fare class or seat category.
Allegiant's initial response is often Trip Credit. Under DOT rules, you have the right to cash. See the DOT refund rule on basic economy fares for how fare class affects (and does not affect) this right.
Allegiant's 24-Hour Free Cancellation
Under the DOT 24-Hour Reservation Requirement, Allegiant must allow cancellation with full refund within 24 hours of purchase, as long as:
- ›
Ticket was booked 7+ days before departure.
- ›
Direct booking with Allegiant (not through third parties like Expedia).
- ›
Original payment method receives the refund.
This applies to ALL Allegiant fares including Saver. If Allegiant refuses a 24-hour cancellation refund for a qualifying ticket, file a DOT complaint immediately.
Trip Flex: What It Actually Does
Trip Flex is an add-on ($10 to $40 typical) that allows one voluntary change or cancellation. Key points:
- ›
One-time use. After the first change, normal rules apply.
- ›
Trip Credit output. Cancellations via Trip Flex produce Trip Credit, not cash.
- ›
1-year expiration on the resulting Trip Credit.
- ›
Does NOT override DOT rules for Allegiant-initiated cancellations.
- ›
Name change not included. Trip Flex is not transferable.
Trip Flex is about voluntary flexibility. It does not affect your rights when Allegiant cancels. You do not lose any DOT refund rights by purchasing (or not purchasing) Trip Flex.
Non-Refundable Saver Fare Reality
Allegiant's standard "Saver" fare is non-refundable for voluntary cancellations (unless Trip Flex was purchased). Non-refundable means:
- ›
No change, no refund if passenger cancels more than 24 hours after booking.
- ›
Forfeits the entire fare if passenger does not travel without protections.
- ›
Does NOT override DOT rules when Allegiant is the cause.
- ›
Does NOT waive the 24-hour cancellation right.
This is standard for ultra-low-cost carriers. Compare with the Frontier refund policy 2026 guide and the Southwest refund policy 2026 guide.
Converting Trip Credit to Cash
If Allegiant issued Trip Credit when a cash refund was actually required (e.g., Allegiant cancelled the flight), convert to cash:
- 1
Call Allegiant Customer Care at 1-702-505-8888.
- 2
State: "Allegiant cancelled my flight. I was issued Trip Credit, but under the DOT final rule I am entitled to cash refund."
- 3
Provide the booking reference and Trip Credit amount.
- 4
Processing time: 14 to 30 business days.
- 5
If refused, file a DOT complaint with the DOT.
What Allegiant Refuses That Is Actually Refundable
- ›
Saver fare after Allegiant cancellation. DOT rule applies.
- ›
Third-party OTA ticket cancelled by Allegiant. Allegiant is responsible.
- ›
Partial itinerary refund (one leg cancelled, other flown): prorated refund applies.
- ›
Ancillary fees (bags, seats, Priority Access) tied to the cancelled leg.
- ›
Trip Flex fee if the flight was cancelled by Allegiant (arguable, but often refunded after DOT complaint).
