EasyJet Delay Compensation: Step by Step Guide

EasyJet is one of Europe's largest low-cost carriers. When your EasyJet flight is delayed by 3 or more hours, EU261 and UK261 entitle you to up to 600 euros or 520 GBP per person. EasyJet's online claims process is relatively straightforward compared to other budget carriers.

EasyJet and EU261/UK261

EasyJet is a UK-based carrier that operates extensively across Europe. Depending on your departure airport, either EU261 or UK261 applies. Flights from UK airports are covered by UK261 (compensation in GBP). Flights from EU airports are covered by EU261 (compensation in EUR).

EasyJet is covered on all routes. As a UK carrier, EasyJet is subject to UK261 on all flights departing or arriving at UK airports, and EU261 on all flights departing EU airports. This means nearly every EasyJet flight is covered by one regulation or the other.

Compensation Amounts

  • Flights up to 1,500 km: €250 / £220 per person.

  • Flights 1,500 to 3,500 km: €400 / £350 per person.

  • Flights over 3,500 km: €600 / £520 per person (rare for EasyJet routes).

Most EasyJet flights are short-haul European routes, so €250 per person is the most common amount. Even at €250, this often exceeds the original ticket price for budget EasyJet fares. Read our EU261 amounts guide for details.

Step-by-Step: Filing Your EasyJet Claim

  1. 1

Go to easyjet.com and navigate to "Help" then "Delayed or Cancelled Flights."

  2. 2

Select "Make a claim under EU261" or "Make a claim under UK261" depending on your departure airport.

  3. 3

Enter your booking reference, flight number, and the date of travel.

  4. 4

Describe the disruption and state the specific compensation amount based on distance.

  5. 5

Submit the form and save the confirmation page and reference number.

  6. 6

EasyJet typically responds within 28 days. If they do not, follow up with a reminder citing the reference number.

If EasyJet Rejects Your Claim

EasyJet rejects claims less aggressively than Ryanair, but rejections still happen. The most common reason is a claim of extraordinary circumstances. If EasyJet cites weather or a technical issue, request written documentation of the specific circumstance and why it could not have been avoided.

Escalate to the [UK CAA](https://www.caa.co.uk/consumers/resolving-travel-problems/) for UK departures or the NEB in the departure country for EU departures. These agencies handle complaints for free and can compel EasyJet to pay.

You can also check your flight with TravelStacks and let us handle the claim process. For tips on writing effective complaint letters, see our complaint letter guide.

EasyJet Duty of Care

In addition to compensation, EU261 and UK261 require EasyJet to provide duty of care during significant delays: meals and refreshments for delays of 2+ hours, hotel accommodation for overnight delays, and transport between the airport and hotel. These rights apply regardless of the cause of the delay.

Keep all receipts. If EasyJet fails to provide meals or a hotel and you pay out of pocket, include those costs in your claim. They are recoverable separately from the fixed compensation amounts.
