Frontier Airlines Delay Compensation: What You Need to Know
Frontier Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier that keeps base fares low by charging for nearly everything else. When your Frontier flight is delayed or cancelled, your rights under DOT rules are the same as any other airline. Here is what Frontier owes you.
Frontier's DOT Obligations
When Frontier cancels your flight or delays it by 3 or more hours (domestic) or 6 or more hours (international), US DOT rules require a full cash refund to your original payment method. This includes the base fare and all ancillary fees you paid.
Frontier's ultra-low fares do not reduce your rights. A $29 base fare gets the same DOT protections as a $500 fare. Cancellation refunds cover the full amount charged, including bag fees and seat fees.
The Challenge with Frontier Delays
Frontier operates a smaller fleet on fewer routes than major carriers, which creates specific challenges during disruptions. When Frontier cancels a flight, the next available Frontier flight may not be for a day or more because Frontier often operates only one daily flight on a given route.
In these situations, requesting a full refund and booking with another carrier is often faster than waiting for Frontier's rebooking. Frontier is not required to book you on a competitor airline. For tips on handling weather-related delays specifically, see our weather delay guide.
How to Get Your Refund
- 1
Go to flyfrontier.com and check "My Trip" for a refund option.
- 2
If no option is available, call Frontier at 801-401-9000.
- 3
Request a "full cash refund to original payment method under the DOT final rule."
- 4
Include all ancillary fees in your request (bags, seats, carry-on).
- 5
Document the confirmation number and any agent names.
If Frontier does not respond or refuses, file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer. For more on the full refund process, read our complete refund guide.
Frontier's Customer Commitments
Frontier has signed a limited version of the DOT customer service dashboard commitment. For controllable cancellations, Frontier commits to rebooking on the next available Frontier flight and providing meal discounts for delays of 3 or more hours.
Frontier's commitments are among the most limited of any US carrier. Unlike Delta or United, Frontier does not commit to providing hotel accommodation for controllable overnight delays through the DOT dashboard. Always document what Frontier does and does not offer.
Escalation Options
Frontier has consistently ranked among the most-complained-about US airlines in DOT data. If your refund is denied, your strongest tools are a DOT complaint and a credit card chargeback. You can also check your flight with TravelStacks to see what you are owed, and we will handle the process for a flat $19.
