How to Get a Refund from United Airlines
United has a refund form at united.com/en/us/refunds but it hides behind a sign-in popup. Here is the complete guide to United's refund and reimbursement process and what to do when it goes wrong.
When United Airlines Owes You a Refund
Under US DOT rules, United must provide a full cash refund to your original payment method when your flight is canceled, when your flight is significantly delayed (3 or more hours domestic, 6 or more hours international) and you choose not to travel, or when United significantly changes your itinerary.
These rules apply to all fare classes including United's Basic Economy tickets. Basic Economy restrictions apply only to voluntary changes. If United cancels or significantly delays your flight, you are entitled to a full refund regardless of what kind of ticket you purchased.
The old United customer-care URL is dead. Many guides still point to united.com/en/us/customer-care, but that link is a dead page. The working help center URL is united.com/en/us/fly/help-center.html.
Step-by-Step: Refund at united.com/en/us/refunds
United's refund form is at [united.com/en/us/refunds](https://www.united.com/en/us/refunds). There is one important quirk: a sign-in popup appears immediately when the page loads. You do not have to sign in.
- 1
Go to [united.com/en/us/refunds](https://www.united.com/en/us/refunds).
- 2
A sign-in popup will appear. Click the X to dismiss it. The refund form is accessible without signing in after dismissing the popup.
- 3
Enter your ticket number and passenger name.
- 4
Select the disruption reason: Flight cancelled by United or Significant delay.
- 5
United is required to refund to your original payment method. If a travel credit is offered, decline it and confirm you want cash to your original payment.
- 6
Save the confirmation. United sends an email acknowledgement with a case number.
United may offer a travel credit first during the refund process. Look carefully at what you are confirming. Select the option for refund to original payment method, not the travel credit option.

- 2
Select: Contact Us then Delayed or Cancelled Flights.
- 3
Choose the sub-topic: Expense Reimbursement, Denied Boarding, or Compensation.
- 4
Enter your MileagePlus number or booking reference.
- 5
Describe the disruption, itemize each expense with amounts, and attach receipts.
- 6
Submit within 3 months of the disruption. United enforces this deadline.
United's Customer Commitment covers meals for controllable delays of 3 or more hours and hotel plus transport for controllable overnight delays. Mechanical issues and crew problems qualify. Weather-related delays do not.
United Airlines Specific Policies

If United Ignores or Denies Your Refund
File a complaint with the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division. Include your case number from the United help center, your flight details, and the amount owed. United is required to respond to all DOT complaints.
Or let TravelStacks handle it for $19. We file with United, follow up at 7, 14, 21, and 30 days, and escalate to a DOT complaint if United goes quiet. You do not touch a form.
