United Canceled Your Flight? How to Get Your Money Back

United Airlines cancels thousands of flights every year. Federal rules give you the right to a full cash refund, expense reimbursement, and in some cases cash compensation. Here is how to claim every dollar you are owed.

Your Rights When United Cancels

When United cancels your flight or significantly delays it (3 or more hours domestic, 6 or more hours international), US DOT rules entitle you to a full cash refund to your original payment method. This applies regardless of why the flight was canceled, what fare class you booked, or whether you bought a refundable or non-refundable ticket.

United's default offer is a travel credit. The DOT rule gives you the right to cash. You must ask for it explicitly. If you accept a credit without being offered cash, you may have waived your right.

If United canceled a flight departing from an EU or UK airport, EU261 or UK261 may also entitle you to fixed cash compensation of up to 600 euros per person, separate from the ticket refund. EU261 covers non-EU carriers on departures from EU airports.

United's Customer Commitment

United is one of the airlines that signed the DOT customer commitment pledge. For controllable cancellations and delays (those caused by United's operations rather than weather or ATC), United has committed to:

  • Meal vouchers for controllable delays of 3 or more hours.

  • Hotel accommodation and ground transportation for controllable overnight delays.

  • Rebooking on the next available United flight or a partner airline at no charge.

  • Proactive notification of cancellations and delays via the United app.

For weather-driven cancellations, United is not required to cover hotel costs, but the refund right is unchanged. You are entitled to cash for any cancellation, controllable or not.

The Voucher Trap

United's cancellation workflow defaults to showing a travel credit offer first. The "Accept" button is prominent. The option to request a cash refund is present but less obvious. This is not accidental.

Travel credits issued by United expire (typically one year from the original ticket purchase), can only be used on United-operated flights, and cannot be transferred. A $300 credit is worth less than a $300 cash refund because of these restrictions.

How to File a Refund Request With United

United's refund portal is at united.com/refunds. You can also call United's refund line at 1-800-864-8331.

  1. 1

Locate your canceled flight in the United app or at united.com under "My Trips."

  2. 2

Select "Request a Refund" rather than the travel credit option.

  3. 3

In any free-text field, write: "I am requesting a full cash refund to my original payment method under the DOT final refund rule (effective October 2024)."

  4. 4

Keep your confirmation number and screenshot the submission.

  5. 5

United must process refunds within 7 business days for credit cards and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.

For delays that United has not yet canceled but that meet the significant-change threshold, the refund process is the same. You may need to call rather than use the app, since the refund option may not appear automatically for delays that have not resulted in an official cancellation.

Expense Reimbursement From United

For controllable cancellations and overnight delays, you can submit receipts for out-of-pocket expenses through United's customer care form at united.com/customer-care. Include your flight number, date, and what United told you was the reason for the disruption.

Qualifying expenses include meals during delays of 3 or more hours (if United did not provide vouchers), hotel accommodation, and ground transportation for controllable overnight stays. Keep every receipt. United will not reimburse without documentation.

Escalating a United Denial

If United denies your refund request or does not respond within the required timeframes, escalate to the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division. Airlines are required to respond to every DOT complaint, and many refunds that went through normal channels without success are issued after a federal complaint is filed.

For claims involving EU or UK departures, escalate to the National Enforcement Body in the departure country. In the UK, that is the Civil Aviation Authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I get a refund if United just delays (not cancels) my flight?

Yes. A delay of 3 or more hours on a domestic flight, or 6 or more hours on an international flight, qualifies as a significant change under DOT rules. If you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a full cash refund to your original payment method.

Q: United rebooked me automatically. Do I still have refund rights?

Yes. An automatic rebooking does not waive your refund right. You have the right to accept the rebooking at no extra charge or reject it and receive a full refund. Tell United explicitly which option you are choosing.

Q: I bought through a travel agency. Can I still get a refund?

Yes. United is still obligated to refund you even if you purchased through a third-party agency. The refund flows back to the agency, which is then required to refund you. For direct-to-airline purchases, United refunds directly.

Q: How long does a United refund take?

DOT requires United to process refunds within 7 business days for credit card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. If you have not received your refund in those windows, file a DOT complaint.

Q: What if United offers miles or upgrades instead of cash?

Miles and upgrade offers are not substitutes for a cash refund under DOT rules. You are legally entitled to a cash refund to your original payment method. Decline these offers and request cash explicitly.

Q: Does EU261 apply to United?

EU261 applies to United when the flight departs from an EU airport. United flights from London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and other EU or UK airports trigger EU261 or UK261 rights even though United is not an EU carrier. Compensation can reach 600 euros per person for delays of 3 or more hours.
