Allegiant Cancelled Your Flight: Refund and Compensation Rights

Allegiant Air is an ultra-low-cost carrier with higher cancellation rates than most US peers and a history of DOT enforcement actions. Here is what Allegiant owes when it cancels, and how to force them to honor the DOT rule they often ignore.

Why Allegiant Cancellations Are Different

Allegiant Air runs a point-to-point network with older MD-80 and Airbus A319/A320 aircraft, thin schedules (many routes 2-3 days per week only), and limited spare capacity. When Allegiant cancels a flight, there is often no same-day rebooking option because Allegiant does not have another flight that day, and Allegiant does not have interline agreements with other airlines.

That means an Allegiant cancellation often becomes a 48-hour to 72-hour disruption, not a same-day inconvenience. Your refund right under DOT rules still applies, but the practical question is whether to wait for the next Allegiant flight or book a competitor.

DOT fined Allegiant $650,000 in 2022 for failing to provide timely refunds during COVID-era cancellations. Allegiant has improved compliance but still runs hotter than Alaska, Delta, and JetBlue on refund complaints.

Your DOT Refund Right on Allegiant

The DOT final rule applies to Allegiant the same as every US carrier. When Allegiant cancels, you are entitled to:

  • Full cash refund to your original payment method, within 7 business days (credit card) or 20 calendar days (other).

  • Refund includes base fare AND all ancillary fees tied to the flight (bags, seats, priority, etc.).

  • Rebooking option on the next available Allegiant flight at no additional cost, if you prefer to travel.

  • Choice is yours: refund OR rebooking. Allegiant cannot force you to accept the rebooking.

Allegiant's Voucher Push

Allegiant's first response to a cancellation is often a travel credit ("Allegiant Trip Credit"), not a cash refund. This is Allegiant's preferred option because trip credits keep revenue in the Allegiant ecosystem. Under DOT rules, you have the right to cash, not credit.

Trip credits expire. Allegiant trip credits typically expire 1 year from issuance. Cash refunds never expire. Always request cash first.

For how Allegiant compares on refund handling, see the Allegiant DOT refund record and the Allegiant refund policy 2026 guide.

How to Request Your Allegiant Refund

  1. 1

Log in to allegiantair.com and go to "Manage Travel." Cancellations should show a refund option.

  2. 2

If only trip credit is shown, call 1-702-505-8888 and say: "I need a cash refund to my original payment method under the DOT final rule."

  3. 3

Record the confirmation number and the agent's name.

  4. 4

Allegiant has 7 business days for credit card refunds, 20 calendar days for other.

  5. 5

If refused, file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

What Allegiant Owes During a Controllable Cancellation

Allegiant is on the DOT airline customer service dashboard, but Allegiant's commitments are thinner than most US carriers. For controllable cancellations:

  • Refund to original payment method (mandatory).

  • Rebooking on next available Allegiant flight at no cost.

  • Partner rebooking: Allegiant does NOT have interline agreements, so rebooking on other airlines is not automatic.

  • Meal and hotel: Allegiant's policies are discretionary. In practice, Allegiant often provides minimal assistance during controllable cancellations.

If Allegiant cancels with no rebooking within 48 hours, get your refund and book on a competitor. Waiting for Allegiant's next flight (often 2-3 days later) can cost more in accommodation than a new ticket on Delta, Southwest, or American.

What If Allegiant Refuses to Refund?

  1. 1

Resubmit in writing via allegiantair.com Customer Care.

  2. 2

Credit card chargeback if paid by card. Allegiant's failure to deliver the service is a "service not rendered" chargeback dispute.

  3. 3

DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer. DOT has a history of enforcement action against Allegiant; complaints are taken seriously.

  4. 4

Small claims court for amounts under $10,000. Many jurisdictions allow filing against Allegiant's registered agent in Nevada.

For how other airlines handle cancellations, see the Frontier cancelled your flight guide, the JetBlue cancelled your flight guide, and the Boston (BOS) flight cancellations guide.

Allegiant's Cancellation Pattern

Allegiant typically cancels 1.5% to 3% of scheduled flights in a given month, based on BTS data. Cancellations cluster on:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday flights (Allegiant's thin-schedule days with less aircraft availability).

  • Small airport routes (Punta Gorda, Knoxville, Flint, Asheville) where replacement aircraft are harder to position.

  • Summer storm weeks and winter weather in the Northeast.

  • Maintenance-driven cancellations (Allegiant's aging fleet has higher maintenance cancellation rates than average).
