Allegiant Lost Bag Claim: Process and Payout
Allegiant Air charges for every checked bag, which makes a lost or delayed bag doubly frustrating. Here is the Allegiant claim process, typical payout amounts, and how to force cash reimbursement instead of Trip Credit.
Allegiant's Baggage Fee Structure Makes This Worse
Allegiant Air charges $30 to $75 per checked bag depending on route and timing. If Allegiant loses the bag, you not only lose the contents but also paid for the disservice. Fortunately, federal rules hold Allegiant liable the same as every US carrier.
The bag fee is refundable too. If Allegiant loses your bag, the bag fee paid is part of your refund claim alongside the contents. Include it explicitly in the claim submission.
Allegiant's Baggage Liability Limits
Under 14 CFR Part 254, Allegiant's domestic baggage liability is capped at $3,800 per passenger. Allegiant does not offer declared value beyond this cap, unlike full-service carriers. International flights fall under the Montreal Convention (~$1,800 USD per passenger), but Allegiant's operations are primarily US domestic.
For declared value options on other airlines, see the airline baggage value declaration guide. For Montreal Convention rules, see the Montreal Convention baggage limit 2026 guide.
Step 1: File the PIR at the Airport
- 1
Before leaving baggage claim, walk to the Allegiant Baggage Service Office.
- 2
File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with your boarding pass and bag tag receipt.
- 3
Get the PIR reference and bag file number.
- 4
Photograph the PIR and any damage.
- 5
Provide a current delivery address for when Allegiant recovers the bag.
Allegiant's baggage service offices are often unstaffed or minimally staffed at off-peak hours. If no agent is present, call Allegiant Customer Care immediately from the airport and request a PIR by phone with the time and date of arrival.
Step 2: Claim Interim Expenses While the Bag Is Delayed
Allegiant's policy on interim expenses during delayed baggage is less generous than full-service carriers. Typical reimbursements:
- ›
Toiletries and basic clothing: up to $50 to $100 per day (lower than industry average).
- ›
Business attire: less consistently covered than full-service carriers.
- ›
Prescription medications: usually covered in full.
- ›
Trip Credit vs cash: Allegiant often offers Trip Credit first. Request cash.
Keep all receipts. Submit within 7 days via allegiantair.com Customer Care. See the baggage claim vs travel insurance double recovery guide for how travel insurance covers what Allegiant doesn't.
Step 3: File the Full Value Claim After 21 Days
If Allegiant cannot trace the bag within 21 days, it becomes officially lost and you file a full value claim. Allegiant's pattern on these claims:
- ›
Initial offer: often 30% to 50% of documented value. Below industry average first offers.
- ›
With receipts: typically 60% to 80% of replacement cost after counter-negotiation.
- ›
With DOT complaint: typically 80% to 100% after escalation.
- ›
Payment method: cash if requested; Allegiant's default is Trip Credit.
Allegiant's Exclusion List
- ›
Cash, securities, checks: zero liability.
- ›
Jewelry: excluded unless in carry-on.
- ›
Electronics: covered for loss, not always for internal damage.
- ›
Antiques, heirlooms: typically excluded.
- ›
Fragile items not properly packed: limited liability.
- ›
Prescription medications are usually covered for delay but not always for lost bags (depends on circumstances).
Carry on anything irreplaceable. Allegiant's liability cap is $3,800 but excludes the categories above, which is where most high-value losses actually occur.
When to Escalate Allegiant Baggage Claims
- 1
First offer below reasonable replacement cost: reject in writing with documentation.
- 2
Trip Credit instead of cash: cite the DOT rule and request cash.
- 3
30+ days with no decision: file a DOT complaint.
- 4
Credit card chargeback if Allegiant refuses the refund entirely.
- 5
Small claims court for amounts above the first offer.
