American Airlines Cancelled Your Flight: Refund and Compensation Rights

Your Rights When American Cancels
When American Airlines cancels your flight, federal DOT rules entitle you to a full cash refund to your original payment method. This applies whether you paid with cash, credit card, gift card, or AAdvantage miles. The reason for cancellation (weather, mechanical, crew, scheduling) does not matter for the refund right.
If the cancellation creates a significant delay to your arrival (3+ hours domestic or 6+ hours international), the same refund right applies. You can choose refund OR rebooking on the next available American or partner flight at no additional cost.
American must refund within 7 business days for credit cards or 20 calendar days for other payment methods under the DOT final rule.
American's Rebooking Network: Oneworld and Beyond
American is the founding US member of the Oneworld alliance, which includes British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, S7, and Alaska Airlines (as a partner, not full member). When American cancels a flight, rebooking options include:

Request partner rebooking explicitly: "Please rebook me on the next available Oneworld partner flight." American's default is often to rebook on the next American flight, which may be 12+ hours away.
Cash vs. Travel Credit: Your Choice
American's first cancellation response often offers a travel credit ("Trip Credit" via the AA mobile app). The credit is faster than a cash refund, but under DOT rules, you have the right to cash back to your original payment method.
If you accept the travel credit and later want to convert, call AA at 1-800-433-7300 and cite the DOT final rule. Conversions typically succeed when the original cancellation was by American. If you paid with AAdvantage miles, American must restore the miles AND refund any taxes or fees paid in cash.
