American Airlines Lost Bag Claim: Process and Payout

American's Baggage Mishandle Rate

American Airlines reports mishandled baggage rates of 4.5 to 6.5 per 1,000 passengers, based on Bureau of Transportation Statistics data. That is slightly worse than industry average and typically worse than Delta and Alaska, but better than ultra-low-cost carriers (Spirit, Frontier). Most mishandles are delayed bags; under 5% become permanently lost after 21 days.

Step 1: File the PIR at the Airport

  • Business attire for business travel: full reasonable cost.

Step 3: File the Full Value Claim After 21 Days

If American cannot trace the bag within 21 days, it is officially lost. Liability caps:

  • Domestic US: up to $3,800 per passenger under 14 CFR Part 254.

  • International: up to 1,288 SDR (~$1,800 USD) under the Montreal Convention.

  • Declared value raises the cap up to $5,000 for domestic and higher for international when declared at check-in.
