Breeze Airways Cancelled Your Flight: Refund and Compensation Rights

Breeze Airways is a newer US carrier founded by JetBlue's David Neeleman with a point-to-point network and limited partner agreements. When Breeze cancels, DOT rules still apply. Here is what Breeze owes, and how to collect.

Breeze Cancellations: What Makes Them Different

Breeze Airways is a US point-to-point carrier operating Airbus A220 and Embraer 190 aircraft across thin markets. Breeze does not have interline agreements with other airlines, so a cancellation can cascade into 1-3 days of delay since the next Breeze flight on the same route may be days away.

Breeze is not on the DOT airline customer service dashboard as a signer of the customer service commitments for meal/hotel. That means Breeze's meal and hotel obligations are minimal. The DOT refund right still applies.

Your DOT Refund Right on Breeze

The DOT final rule applies to Breeze the same as every US carrier. When Breeze cancels:

  • Full cash refund to original payment method, 7 business days (credit card) or 20 calendar days (other).

  • Refund includes base fare + ancillary fees (bags, seat selection, extras).

  • Rebooking option on the next available Breeze flight (no interline).

  • Your choice: refund OR rebooking. Breeze cannot force the rebooking.

Breeze Bucks vs. Cash Refund

Breeze's first response to a cancellation is often "Breeze Bucks" (a travel credit), not cash. Under DOT rules, you have the right to cash back to original payment method.

  • Breeze Bucks expire in 24 months from issuance.

  • Cash refunds never expire.

  • Breeze Bucks can only be used on Breeze.

  • Cash can be used anywhere (including booking on another airline).

How to Request Your Breeze Refund

  1. 1

Log in to flybreeze.com and navigate to "My Trips." Cancellations should show a refund option.

  2. 2

If only Breeze Bucks are offered, contact Customer Service at 1-501-273-3931 or via in-app chat. Request cash refund to original payment method.

  3. 3

Cite the DOT final rule (October 2024).

  4. 4

Record the case number and agent's name.

  5. 5

Breeze must process within DOT timelines.

  6. 6

If refused, file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

What Breeze Provides During a Controllable Cancellation

Breeze is not on the DOT customer service dashboard, so obligations are minimal. Typical Breeze offerings:

  • Refund or rebooking: required under DOT rules.

  • Meal vouchers: discretionary; sometimes issued at larger stations.

  • Hotel voucher: discretionary; rarely provided for overnight cancellations.

  • Ground transport: discretionary; rarely provided.

  • Partner rebooking: not available (no interline agreements).

With no interline rebooking and limited meal/hotel, take the refund and book a competitor for urgent travel. Breeze's thin schedule means waiting for the next Breeze flight can take 24 to 72 hours.

What If Breeze Says No?

  1. 1

Resubmit in writing via flybreeze.com Customer Support.

  2. 2

File a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

  3. 3

Credit card chargeback if paid by card.

  4. 4

Small claims court for amounts within state limits (typically $5,000 to $10,000).

Breeze's Cancellation Performance

As a newer carrier, Breeze's cancellation rate varies. Per BTS data, typical monthly cancellation rates run 1.5% to 4.0%, which places Breeze in the middle among US carriers. Common Breeze cancellation causes:

  • Crew timeouts on thin-schedule routes.

  • Maintenance on growing Airbus A220 fleet.

  • Weather cascades with no backup aircraft.

  • Point-to-point network gives no rerouting flexibility.
