Delta Cancelled My Flight: Here's Exactly What I'm Owed

Delta cancelled flight compensation rights are clearer than ever under the 2024 DOT refund rule. You are entitled to a full cash refund, rebooking on the next available Delta flight at no charge, and in some cases hotel and meal vouchers. This guide covers exactly what Delta owes you and how to collect it.

Delta Cancelled Flight Compensation: Your Federal Rights

A Delta cancelled flight compensation claim starts with a simple federal rule: if Delta cancels your flight for any reason, including weather, mechanical issues, or crew shortage, you are entitled to a full cash refund to your original payment method. The 2024 DOT final rule made this automatic: Delta cannot offer you an eCredit (their travel voucher) unless you explicitly consent to it in writing. The refund must be processed within 7 business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for cash or check.

Delta eCredits are not refunds. If Delta offers you an eCredit after a cancellation, you can decline and demand a cash refund to your credit card. This is your legal right under federal law, not a special request.

The Full List of What Delta Owes You

  • Cash refund: Full refund to original payment method for any cancelled flight, within 7 business days (credit card).

  • Rebooking: Delta commits to rebooking you on the next available Delta flight to your destination at no charge, or on a partner airline if Delta does not have a suitable option.

  • Meal vouchers: Delta's customer service plan provides meal vouchers when you are waiting more than 3 hours at the airport due to a Delta-caused cancellation.

  • Hotel accommodation: For overnight cancellations caused by Delta (mechanical, crew, operational issues), Delta commits to hotel accommodation and ground transport.

  • Travel credit: If you miss the hotel offer, Delta may reimburse reasonable hotel costs with receipt. Keep all receipts.

  • SkyMiles: Delta sometimes offers additional miles as a goodwill gesture. You can accept these without affecting your cash refund right.

What Delta Does NOT Owe You Under US Law

US law does not require Delta to pay you additional cash compensation for a delay or cancellation beyond the refund and accommodation commitments above. If your Delta flight is cancelled and you are rebooked and choose to fly, you receive no additional cash payment for the inconvenience under US domestic rules. This is fundamentally different from the EU261 framework. The lack of a fixed cash compensation mandate for US domestic delays is one of the starkest contrasts between US and European passenger rights.

For context on how US and EU rights compare, see EU261 vs US DOT: which gives you more money.

EU261 Rights on Delta Flights from Europe

EU261 applies to Delta flights departing EU airports. If your Delta flight departed from Amsterdam (AMS), Paris (CDG), Frankfurt (FRA), or any other EU airport, and Delta cancelled it or you arrived at your final destination more than 3 hours late, you are entitled to EU261 compensation of EUR 250, 400, or EUR 600 depending on the distance, in addition to the full cash refund. Delta has improved EU261 compliance in recent years but still disputes claims citing extraordinary circumstances. File with the national enforcement body in your departure country if Delta rejects a valid EU261 claim.

EU261 applies to ALL passengers on Delta flights departing EU airports, including US citizens. Nationality is irrelevant. A passenger from Alabama flying Delta out of Paris has the same EU261 rights as a French national.

How to Use the Fly Delta App After a Cancellation

Delta's app is genuinely useful during cancellations. When Delta detects a disruption, the Fly Delta app typically pushes an auto-rebook notification within minutes of the cancellation announcement, often before ground staff are aware. Accept the auto-rebook if the new flight works for you, or tap 'Change Flight' to pick an alternative. You can also view your refund status directly in the app. If the auto-rebook takes you to an unacceptable connection or time, go to the Delta app's 'Trip' section and select 'Rebook' to choose another option before all seats on desirable flights are taken.

Step-by-Step: How to Claim Your Delta Cancellation Refund

  1. 1

Screenshot the cancellation notification from Delta (email, app, or SMS).

  2. 2

Decide: do you want to rebook (use the Delta app) or cancel and get a refund?

  3. 3

If refund: go to delta.com, navigate to 'My Trips', and select 'Refund' for the cancelled itinerary.

  4. 4

If Delta does not process the refund within 7 business days (credit card) or 20 calendar days (cash), file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer.

  5. 5

For EU261 (EU-departing Delta flights): file a separate EU261 claim with Delta's dedicated EU claims team at delta.com or use a claims service.

  6. 6

Keep all receipts for hotels, meals, and transport if stranded overnight.
