Route overview
Your rights on ORD-LAX flights
Under US DOT rules, your rights do not depend on the reason for the disruption. They apply to all carriers on US-departing flights.
Refund
100%
Full cash refund to your original payment method for any canceled flight or significant delay where you choose not to travel. Applies regardless of ticket type including Basic Economy.
Expense reimbursement
For controllable delays and cancellations, airlines with DOT customer commitments must reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses: meals during delays of 3+ hours, and hotel plus transport for controllable overnight delays.
Denied boarding (IDB)
Up to $1,550
If you are involuntarily bumped from an oversold flight, DOT mandates cash compensation of up to $775 or $1,550 depending on how long you are delayed. Payment must be made on the spot.
Why ORD-LAX flights get delayed
- 1.O'Hare is consistently ranked among the most delay-prone airports in the US, with congestion delays affecting nearly every bank of flights.
- 2.Winter weather in Chicago - including ice, snow, and low visibility - is a major driver of ORD cancellations between November and March.
- 3.Midwest convective weather in summer creates ground stops and ATC reroutes that add hours to westbound flights.
- 4.Late-arriving inbound aircraft from East Coast routes cause cascading outbound delays from O'Hare throughout the day.
- 5.LAX airspace congestion means ORD-LAX flights frequently hold before landing, turning a 4-hour flight into a 5-hour one.
Weather delays do not eliminate your right to a refund if you choose not to travel.

How to claim compensation for a ORD-LAX disruption
Check your eligibility
Find your ORD-LAX flight number and date. A delay of 3 or more hours to your final destination, a cancellation, or involuntary denied boarding triggers your DOT rights. The reason for the disruption does not matter for refund eligibility.
Gather your documents
You need your booking confirmation or e-ticket number, the flight number and date, receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred during the disruption, and your boarding pass if available.
Submit your claim to the airline
File your refund or reimbursement claim directly with the airline. Reference the specific DOT rule, state the amount owed, and request a response within 14 days. Vague requests get delayed or denied.
Escalate if denied
If the airline ignores your claim or offers a voucher instead of cash, file a DOT complaint at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Most airlines respond once a federal complaint is filed.
