Which US Airline Has the Worst Delay Record in 2026?

Not all airlines are equal when it comes to delays and cancellations. BTS data reveals significant differences in on-time performance. Here is how the major US airlines rank in 2026, and what it means for your compensation rights.

On-Time Performance Rankings

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) tracks on-time arrival performance for every US airline. A flight is considered "on time" if it arrives within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival. Rankings shift monthly, but historical patterns are consistent.

Airlines with the best historical on-time records include Delta and Hawaiian. Airlines with the worst historical records include JetBlue, Frontier, and Spirit. Visit our airline rankings page for the latest data.

On-time performance varies by route and season. An airline with good overall numbers may have poor performance on specific routes. Check route-specific data before booking.

Cancellation Rates

Cancellation rates are equally important. A cancellation triggers automatic refund rights under DOT rules and EU261 compensation for qualifying routes. Airlines with higher cancellation rates generate more compensation-eligible events for passengers.

Ultra-low-cost carriers (Spirit and Frontier) tend to have higher cancellation rates during irregular operations because they have fewer alternative flights and partner agreements for rebooking. Full-service carriers (Delta, United) have lower cancellation rates partly because they can rebook passengers on more flights.

What Rankings Mean for Your Rights

Your compensation rights are the same regardless of which airline you fly. A 3-hour delay on the worst-performing airline triggers the same DOT refund right as a 3-hour delay on the best. However, passengers on frequently delayed airlines have more opportunities to claim. For details on all airlines, see our airline rankings.

The DOT Air Travel Consumer Report publishes monthly data on complaints, on-time performance, and cancellations. For a detailed look at the refund process, see our refund guide. Check your flight to see if a recent delay qualifies.
